Edmund Ironside Assumes Rule
Edmund will be the last British king for a while. His 6 month reign was ended when Knut took over England. He and the Dane had fought and agreed to split the kingdom of England, and on Edmund's death, England fell under Danish control until 1066 -
Edward the Elder Assumes Rule
Edward took over rule as king of the Anglo Saxons when his father died. He drove the Danes out of York and East Anglia. He also took over rule of Mercia upon his sister's death. -
Aethelred the Glorious Assumes Rule
Aethelred was the first king to unify Britain. After the Treaty of Eamont Bridge (927) through the Battle of Brunanburh (937) he took over Scotland. -
Edmund I Assumes Rule
Edmund faced several military problems during his reign. The midlands were reconquered by the Danes and only upon King Olaf's death was Edmund able to take back the midlands in 942. He conquered more of Scotland but ceded it back to Malcolm I of Scotland (945) to cement a mutual protection pact. Very little is known about Eadred's reign. It is thought that he faced political problems maintaining his rule over Scotland and that he faced Erik Bloodaxe trying to assume rule as king of Northumbria -

Eadwig again faced political problems - this time from within his family. He is known for his generocity in giving lands -
Edgar Assumes Rule
Edgar consolodated the rule of England (finally) to the point where it was unlikely that Britain would revert back to warring kingships. His succession would be the last uncontested assumption of the throne -
Edward the Martyr Assumes Rule
Edward assumed rule under contested circumstances. He is best remembered from his death scene in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicles where he is used as a pincushion by a group of archers under the control of Aethelred. -
Aethelred Assumes Rule
Aethelred is best known for paying Danegeld (tribute) to the Danes from 991 onwards to keep control of England. After he ordered the massacre of a Danish settlement in 1012, he was forced to flee to Normundy in 1013. He also ruled during the time of the Epic poem, the Battle of Malden. -
Alfred the Great Assumes Rule
Alfred (or Aelfred) the Great was a West Saxon king and the first king of England. He wasn't recognized as king until around 886 after having fought off the Danish Vikings a number of times. He fortified burroughs around the kingdom and reinforced London. He created centres of learning around England and introduced a system of law. He is known as the father of the English Navy -
