    Barbers didn't only cut hair, they also were surgeons and would perform surgeries. They also served with the military and would treat wounded soldiers. The surgeries they practiced were to treat cataracts and practiced phlebotomy. They amputated limbs and burned the stumps to seal the blood vessels.

    The striped flag that are in front of barber shops have lots of meaning. After an operation, the bandages would be hung on a staff or pole outside of the barbers shop. When twirled by the wind, they would form a spiral pattern that was red and white.

Instead of using random stuff to explain diseases people started looking for real reasons and causes of these things. The scientific method is making observations and then taking notes.
