Medical Advances: The Last 400 Years

  • Opthamoscope

    Opthamoscope
Invented by Dr Charles Babbage. This device lets you see as close into the eye as possible. I chose this because medical technology that has to do with vision has become a part of my life because of how blind I am. (This isn't the actual date, Just the year)
  • Anesthesia

    Anesthesia
In 1846, American dentist William Morton introduced Ether as an anesthetic. This was the start of a whole new meaning to surgery. Years later, chloroform was introduced. But this was the baby of it all. I chose this because without this discovery anesthetic might not have ever been around, and think of how cruel that'll be.
  • Germ Theory

    Germ Theory
Louis Pasteur. The more formal experiments on the relationship between germ and disease were conducted by Louis Pasteur between 1860 and 1864. He discovered the pathology of the puerperal fever and the pyogenic vibrio in the blood, and suggested using boric acid to kill these microorganisms before and after confinement. I chose this milestone because theories are always the key to science and I'm always reading as much as I'd like to on them.
  • Tetanus Vaccine

    Tetanus Vaccine
Tetanus is a potentially fatal bacterial infection that affects the nerves. A vaccine can easily prevent the infection, which has no cure. The first vaccine for passive immunology was discovered by a group of German scientists under the leadership of Emil von Behring in 1890. The first inactive tetanus toxoid was discovered and produced in 1924. I chose this because even though it is very rare it can become very lethal and result in a hard painful death.
  • First Blood Bank

    First Blood Bank
American Bernard Fantus starts the first blood bank at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, using a 2% solution of sodium citrate to preserve the blood. Refrigerated blood lasts 10 days. I chose this because its such a large milestone. It made what we have today
  • Chlorpromazine

    Chlorpromazine
Chlorpromazine was synthesized in December 1951 in the laboratories of Rhône-Poiulenc, and became available on prescription in France in November 1952. It was introduced as the first anti psychotic. It was known to improve the aggressiveness of schizophrenic patients. I picked this because I've always been fascinated by mental illnesses and how they alter the brain.
  • Heart & Lung Machine

    Heart & Lung Machine
In May 1953, John Gibbon was the first to successfully operate a heart and lung surgery. This created a large foundation for the modern cardiac surgery that is performed all over world. I chose this because I saw it on Grey's Anatomy and I was fascinated.
  • The First Kidney Transplant: Identical Twins

The First Kidney Transplant: Identical Twins
Dr. Joseph E. Murray of Massachusetts performs the first kidney transplant between identical twins. Honestly I JUST THOUGHT THIS WAS REALLY COOL BECAUSE THERE ARE LESS CHANCES OF REJECTION.
  • Birth Control Pill

    Birth Control Pill
While the contraceptive pill wasn't invented by solely one person it is still a very important milestone in medical history. pills that work to release hormones in order to prevent the body from becoming pregnant. I chose the because this pill has changed women's lives and has become an important role in decision making. In the 1950s Sanger had raised enough to fun the project to invent the first birth control pill. In 1960,the first oral contraceptive was approved by the FDA as a contraceptive
  • Hepatitis B Vaccine

    Hepatitis B Vaccine
In 1963, Dr. Baruch was the first to make a major breakthrough in the presence of Hepatitis B. Hepatitis B is a disease that infects the liver causing it to become inflamed or really bumpy.I chose this milestone because without the discovery and understanding of this virus we wouldn't have the vaccine to prevent it.
