Introduction
Greg S. Gaines sets the setting and introduces himself as if he is writing his own book. He describes what he looks like and basically how the book is going. This isn't going to be a heartwarming story about a girl and her cancer. Quite the opposite, really. -
Groups
Greg introduces all the social classes and groups/cliques within his own high school. Greg also states that he really isn't apart of any groups nor does he really have friends, but he does at the same time. He does this by going group to group but not specifically going to any of the events that requires giving his 'allegiance' to any specific group. -
The Dying Girl
After talking about all his (Greg's) failed attempts at flirting with girls he makes a chapter on where these girls are now. This mentions a girl named Rachel. He explains that she has acute myelogenous leukemia. Next chapter Greg explains how he found out about Rachel's leukemia. Then the first conversation they have had in years takes place in the next chapter after that. -
Earl
Earl is introduced. He is someone that Greg would consider calling a friend -- Greg considers him more like a coworker. However, when Earl is first introduced he is more than a little profane. Strangely enough Greg says that Earl has really mellowed out since Middle School. It is demonstrated right away that Earl will turn his "gross out" humor on you if you go along with it, and will make it seem like you're being the gross one. -
Greg visits Rachel
Greg goes over to Rachel's house. The air between Greg and Rachel is more than just a little bit awkward because all Greg can think of talking about to Rachel is the fact she has leukemia. Greg then makes jokes about pillows to ease at least a little bit of the awkward tension. -
Earl Backstory
Greg explains how Earl and him became friends. He also explains how they got into making movies together. -
Greg visits Rachel II
In the beginning they start talking about T.V. shows. Greg makes so me dumb jokes that make Rachel laugh (as per usual). Greg then thinks about how Rachel is using his own friend tactics against him. Greg mentions something about how he thinks Rachel is dying. -
More Earl Backstory
Greg and Earl have watched a German movie so many times to the point where Earl could say some lines in German when they were young. This is the point where Greg and Earl start making their versions of films. -

A list of some films Earl and Greg have created together over the years. There is detailed description on how each of them went, what the contents of the movie contain, and a star rating. -
Even More Earl backstory
This talks more about films in the beginning of this and then moves on to what happened to Earl. Earl was smoking cigarettes already in middle school. Greg seemed to have a hard time making friends in middle school. Earl and Greg have still somehow managed to stay friends. -
Mr. McCarthy
Mr. McCarthy is a strange high-school teacher. When someone says a true fact he will scream "TRUE FACT," and sometimes "RESPECT THE RESEARCH." If the fact is wrong he screams, "FALSE FACT." Earl and Greg try some of his soup. They think that they got high off of it. -
"Drugs Are the Worst"
Earl and Greg decide it is a good idea to visit Rachel while on drugs, so they do. (Rachel is getting chemo the next day so that's why they are going in the first place.) Greg tries to play off that they are not on drugs. This doesn't work out and Greg eventually admits that they (Greg and Earl) are in fact on drugs. Earl admits that he and Greg also make films and Greg feels betrayed. Greg also learns that their classmate Phil was the reason they got high -- it was his cookies. -
"Two Poncy Dudes"
Rachel goes to get chemo done at the hospital. Earl and Greg are watching a movie. They basically just talk about films for a while. Earl and Greg decide that it would be good to visit Rachel in the hospital. One of Earl's brothers starts a fight with Earl. This is a normal thing to happen in Earl's house, though. -
Rachel The Film
Greg and Earl visit Rachel in the hospital. Greg and Earl learn that Rachel is in fact going to die from her leukemia. They begrudgingly decide to make a film about/for Rachel. All their initial attempts on making the film about/for Rachel turned out badly, to say the least. -
Rachel The Film II
They show the film they made for Rachel to Rachel. Greg absolutely hates how it turned out and believes that it is the single-most worst film they (Greg and Earl) have ever made. The film eventually gets played at school. Greg's classmates didn't really enjoy the film all too much. Rachel dies and Earl and Greg live their lives out afterwards.
