Theme Statement: Continue being yourself even though everything around is falling apart

Vladek moves closer to Anja
Vladek gets engaged to Anja, and he moves from Czestochowa to Sosnowiec. This is a good turning point as they are now together more. This is relevant to the theme as they still continued on with their love. -
Richieu is born
Richieu, son of Anja and Vladek, is born. This is a positive character development as Richieu is Anja and Vladek's first child. This is relevant to the theme as Richieu was an important person to Anja and Vladek being together. -
Vladek gets married
Vladek gets married and moves into his father in law's apartment. This is positive character development as Vladek finally finds someone he loves. This is relevant to the theme as Vladek kept doing what he wanted to do with his life. -
Vladek heads off to war
Vladek gets his draft notice. He sends Anja and Richieu off and heads towards the front line. A few months after, he gets captured. This is negative character development as the whole family learns of this war. The relevance to the theme was that Vladek kept helping everyone else even through his life was in jeopardy. -
Vladek's gets relocated
Vladek and his father-in-law's household gets relocated to the Stara Sosnowiec Quarter. This was a turning point as they move into a smaller less luxurious place. This is relevant to the theme as even though they are downgrading from their old house. -
Vladek goes into hiding
Vladek goes into hiding with Anja, first with Mrs. Kowka, then with Mrs. Motonowa. This is character development as Vladek becomes grateful that they are still alive, even with rats walking over them. This is relevant to the theme as Vladek is still positive even though their living conditions are horrible. -
Vladek is sent to Auschwitz
Vladek is sent to Auschwitz along with Anja. This is a turning point as he knows where this is and what happens in Auschwitz. (The month and the day are not completely accurate.) This is relevant to the theme as Vladek knew what was happening, yet Vladek made sure not to scream or cry.
