Northwest Ordinance of 1787
The Western territory will now be owned by the US.This will invent the process of creating new states. -
Pickney's Treaty
This treaty was initiated by the Us gaining control of New Orleans. It then set Southern boundaries with the US and Spain. -
Louisiana Purchase
France took back control of New Orleans so the US now needed access to the state. Delegation was sent by Jefferson to France. Napolean then offered $15 million for Louisiana. Federalists argue it unconstitutional but he buys it anyway doubling the size of the country. -
Lewis and Clark Expedition
Was the first American expedition to cross what is known as present-day western United States. Lewis and Clark were to explore the new territory and establish American presence in the territoy before Britian tried to claim it. -
Treaty of 1818
This treaty aided in setting the Canadian border to the United States. This border line did not touch Oregon. -
Florida Purchase Treaty
The Florida Purchase Treaty was also known as the Adams-Onis Treaty. This is the treaty that stated that the Us had bought the state of Floride from Spain. Also setting the Spanish to American boundaries. -
Missouri Compromise
Missouri declares itself a slave state while Maine declares itsself a free state. This compromise states that there is to be no slavery above 36.30'. -
Russo American Treaty
This treaty set the boundaries between the Russian and American claims. This treaty was signed in April 17th, 1824 in St.Petersburg but was not put into effect until January 12, 1825. This gave Russia the claim to waht we know as Oregon Country. -
Indian Removal Act
Indian tribes were pushed off of Eastern land and made to move to the West of the Mississippi river. Most of the tribes went in peace. -
Cherokee Removal Act
Georgia made it a point to push the Cherokee off of their land. One treaty was settled with the signing of the Worcester vs. Gerogia when the Cherokee became a seperate Nation. The Treaty of New Echota was then signed for Cherokee removal. -
Trail of Tears (1836-1839)
The Trail of Tears was was the journey that the Indians had to take when the government forced the Indians to remove themselves from the land East of the Mississippi. The Indians had to pack all of their belongings and travel thousands of miles. -
Battle of the Alamo
Was a major event during the Texas Revolution. The Texans lost the battle. -
Oregon Trail
In the year 1841, people begin to travel westward in wagons along the Oregon Trail. Was the longest migration trail in North American history. -
Texas becomes a U.S State
In 1836, Texas asks President Jackson for statehood, the Northern states oppose, believing it's a conspiracy to gain more slave states to tip the balance. When Texas is finally claimed as a state, it eventually leads to the cause of the Mexican-American War. -
Mexican-American War
The war was fought over the rights of Texas. Following the war, the US paid $15M to Mexico for the land that is now known as California, Nevada and other states.
