Cotton Gin Invention
This invention allowed for cotton to be removed more quickly. Because of this, demands for cotton planting and slaves grew. In order to produce more cotton, the South needed more lands. -
Pinckney's Treaty Signed
Signed as an intention of friendship between US and Spain.This treaty allowed US to travel the Mississipi. As a result, new lands were explored and claimed. -
Missouri Compromise Introduced
In order to balance Congressional power, this law was passed. Missouri became a slave state, and Maine as a free state.
This law also prohibited slavery in the Louisiana Territory north of the 36° 30´ latitude line. This compromise affected the Manifest Destiny because it introduced Missouri as a state. -
Indian Removal Act
Signed by Andrew Jackson, forcing the Indians to move westward. This resulted in the settlement of whites in the previously inhabited Indian lands. -
Polk Defeats Clay in the "Manifest Destiny" Election
By being elected as President, Polk influenced the Manifest Destiny. He also had a hand on California, because he was the decision maker on gaining the lands there. -
United States Annexes Texas
Admitted to the Union as the 28th state, the US also inherited the Mexican dispute. This eventually caused the Mexican-American war. But it also allowed for the gaining of new territory. -
Mexican-American War
This was caused by the conflict between Mexico and the US. It was caused by the annexation of Texas. It allowed for the Mexican cession. -
Oregon Treaty Signed
This treaty brought an end to the Oregon boundary dispute between Britian. Allowed for American setting in the west. -
Walker Tariff Signed
Tariffs that were begun by the Democrats. It was one of the lowest tariffs in American history. It allowed for more trade, therefore profit, which influenced the Manifest Destiny. -
California Gold Rush Begins
This event tempted many people to move west. The reason for this is because of the profit that gold produced, but also mainly because of the business opportunity. -
Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo
Resulted after the Mexican-American war. It gave the United States the Rio Grande boundary for Texas and California, -
Compromise of 1850
US gains CA as a free state, NM and UT became territories,Texas boundary is altered, DC slave trade is banned, and the fugitive slave act was passed. This gave the US more territories to settle in. -
Kansas-Nebraska Act
This was the creation of the Kansas and Nebraska territories. Because of this act, new lands were open for white settlement. -
Gadsden Purchase From Mexico
Strip of land (current day Arizona) that was purchased by the United States from Mexico. The purpose of this purchase was to insure the possession of the Mesilla Valley to build railroads. Allowed for expansion southwest. -
Homestead Act
Signed by Abraham Lincoln, it was the law that would give 160 acres of land in the west to anyone who farmed it for 5 years. It encouraged poor people of the east and south to move westward. -
Alaskan Purchase
This was the purchase of Alaskan lands from the Russian Empire. From this purchase, the US gained new territories. It gave future US gold, oil, and copper resources. -
First Transcontinental Railroad Finished
Built from 1863 till 1869, originally known as the Pacific Railroad. Allowed for Eastern US to travel, and connected the Pacific to the Atlantic for the first time. This increased attraction to the West. -
Massacre at Wounded Knee
US troops massacred 300 indians. This event symbolized the last of the war fcr the west. The indians gave up their lands and their resistance. -
Oklahoma Land Rush
This was event allowed the whites to settle on Indian territory. These lands were considered as some of the best lands in the US. The rush influenced more whites to settle westward. -
Annexation of Hawaii
This event extended US territory in the Pacific. It also allowed for economic growth for the US. It is the final event of the Manifest Destiny.
