Manifest Destiny is the belief that it is the American peoples God given right to expand west to the pacific ocean. -
Original 13 Colonies
The Orginal 13 colonies declared thier independence with the Decloration Of Independence. This was a document created by the seconed continental congerss that proclamed the the United Stats was its own independent country. The United States gained control of this land after the defeted the British in the Revolutionary War and when the traty of paris was singned in 1781.The American Revolution lasted for six years and weakend the newly formed United States due to a tremendos amount of war debts. -
Northwest Territory continued
The territory must offer free public education to all citizens and slavery must be illligal. -
Northwest Territory
The United States obtained the Northwest Territory when the Treaty of Paris was signed after the revolutionary war. Five states were created from this territory; Ilinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin. The requirements for a territory to become a states was; There must be 60,000 people living in the territory, a constitution must be drafted, a bill of rights must be drafted, the territory must ask perrmission to join the union. -
Louisiana Purchase
The United States obtained the Louisiana Territory from Napoleon. The Louisiana Territory included the Mississippi River and the city of New Orleans. These were important to the United States because the Mississippi River was a passagway for trade and New Orleans was a important trading port for goods sent to Europe. -
Louisiana Purchase Continued
President Thomas Jefferson is cretidid with purchasing the Louisiana Territory. He bought it for 15 million dollars. The Addition of the Louisiana Territoy more that doubled the size of the United States. -
Adams-Onis Treaty
The Southerners were upset with Native American tribe the Seminole because they were raiding American towns and freeing slaves near the Florida border. Persident Monroe sent Andrew Jackson to the Florida border to settle the dispute but he invaded Florida and captured the Seminole. This was unconstiutional because he invaded Florida against the presidents orders. Spain and The United States agreed on the Adams-Onis treaty the U.S gained east Florida and Spain gained Texas. -
Texas Annexation
The word "annex" means to take control of. Americans moved to Texas because the Mexican government promised them cheap land and they could take thier slaves with them and the Mexican government wasn't makeing slavery illigal. -
Texas Annexation part 2
The Mexican government began to take away rights and made things illigal to settlers who moved to Texas like they all had to chatholic, they had to follow Mexican laws and they had to become citizens of Mexico. The events that surronded Texas becomeing a republic were that the Texas army attaked the Mexican army begining the Battle of San Jacinto. Then they captured the Mexican leader and forced him to sign a treaty giving Texas its independence. A republic is a government with representives. -
Texas Annexation part 3
Newly formed republic Texas was haveing problems with its economy and Mexico. Texas had very little money because its economy was baced mostly on farming and there was little industry.They also had problems with Mexico because Mexico still conciderd Texas its territory. The United States didn't let Texas join the union as a state because Texas allowed slavery and that would break the balence of free and slave states in the U.S. -
Mexican Cession
The main issue that caused the Mexican American War was the dispute of where the real Texas border was. The U.S claimed that it was the Rio Grande river but Mexico claimed that it was the Nveces River. The Treaty that ended the Mexican-Amercan war was the Treaty of Guadalupe. Under the Mexican Cession the states of California, Nevada, Utah most of Arizona and New Mexico and parts of Colorado and Wyoming. The Mexican Cession made the U.S 25% bigger. -
Oregon Territory
The United States originally shared the Oregon Territory with Great Britan. By signing a treaty the United States was trying to avoid war with Great Britan. The States of Washington Oregon and Idaho were created out of the Oregon Territory -
Gadsden Purchase
The Unided States agreed to buy the land under the Gadsden Purchase because they were trying to avoid going to war with Mexico and claiming all of Mexico as part of the United States. The U.S paid $10 million for the southern parts of Arizona and Mew Mexico. With the addition of the Gadsden Purchase all continental boundaries of the U.S were now fixed the Idea of Manifest Destiny is complete because now the U.S has claimed all the western land.
