    McCormick Reaper Patented
    The mechanical reaper was invented and patented by Cyrus McCormick. Prior to its use, farmers had to cut grain by hand. Using this method was labor-intesive work. The new reaper was pulled by horses or mules and was a pivotal improvement in agriculture. Farmers could now harvest faster and more efficiently than using a scythe or sickle.

    Willian B. Travis, a Lieutenant of a small force of 180 was holding in a Spanish Catholic Mission called the Alamo. Santa Anna's Troops learned about this when arriving in San Antonio and quickly went to the Alamo. Williams Job was to give Houston's army time to prepare for Santa's army. And he did so by giving them nearly two weeks

    Texas declares independence
    The Texas Declaration of Independence was signed at Washington-on-the-Brazos which is refer to the brith place of Texas. There declaration of independence was declared during there rebellion to the Mexican goverment. In December 1835 Tejanos or the Texans captured San Antonio. On March 6 the seige of the Alamo ended!

    THE ALAMO VIDEOSanta Anna's 6,000 go to San Antonio to find 180 rebels wholed up in an abandoned mission known as the Alamo. Although the Texan Army held the Mexican Army for 13 days they soon ran out of ammunition. They were overran but succeeded in harming or killing 600 mexican soldiers and giving Houston's Army two weeks to organize themselves.

    Houston decides to wait for Mexico to make a mistake. It comes when Santa Anna allows his troops to rest and recuperate at the San Jacinto River. Houston surprises them and takes Santa Anna hostage. Houston then forces Mexico to recognize Texas as its own country.

    YoutubeWhen westward expansinon began, farmers faced difficulties plowing western soil that was much different than the soil of the east. The wooden or iron plows they used would keep breaking or get dirt stuck in them. John Deere invented the sharp-edged steel plow that easily broke through soil and cut the labor needed to plow an acre in half.

    WESTERN EXPANSION VIDEO When Western Settlement began, the government wanted to scout the land and then sell large portions of it to real estate companies, who would in turn sell it to settlers. Many settlers, called "squatters", settled farms on land they did not own. They planned to buy it directly from the government. Congress then passed the Preemption Act that protected those that already established settlements and allowed anyone to buy land that had not been surveyed yet.

    President Harrison was the ninth president of the United States. He was an American Military Officer, and he was born as a british subject. When he died it sparked a constitutional crisis that was resolved quickly. Before he was elected President Harrison was the first territorial congressional delegate from the North West Territory.

    Spain had claimed the terrioty of Texas this conflict arose in 1845 with the annexation of Texas. They declared independence because they did not have strong ties with the spanish community. Combat operations began in spring 1846 and ended in fall of 1847. Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ended the war and with that come Texas's independence from Mexico.It became the 28 State to join the union.

    This long famine lasted 6 years and killed millions of people. The disease that the plant acculted is now as blight that could affect other plants such as Tomatoes. The disease spread through spores on the leafs of the potato plants. This caused thousands of imgrants to travel to America. This famine happens becasue they used primary one type of potato know as Russets.

    President James K Polk and Congress vote to declare war on Mexico. After the Texans capture San Antonio, Santa Anna begins to march an army up to recapture the city. In the early phases of the war Texans faced major difficultlys against the trained army. The Texans gained theri first victory at Gonzales. The War ended with The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo after the capture of the Mexican general.

    In June 1846 their were 3 nations that where figthing over Pacfic Northwest. THe included the United States, Great Britan and Russia. The Adams Onis Treaty of 1819, granted the Americans and the British land in the territorial claims in the Pacfic northwest. In 1844 they annexed the Oregon to the United States.

    The Mormons Arrive at the Great Salt Lake
    After Joseph Smith, the prophet of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, was martyred, thousands of Mormons set out west to escape persecution. Brigham Young lead these Saints on the Mormon Trail, a path that would eventually be travelled by 70,000 church members. They ended their journey in the Salt Lake Valley and built a new settlement "Deseret", meaning "honey bee".

    U.S. troops storm Mexico City
    During the rising tension after Congress declared war on Mexico, the united states gains some major ground in this war. At Goliad Texan troops suffered a lose after surrendering to Mexican troops. The Battle of Jacinto ended the war after Santa Anna was captured. This battle only lasted 20 minutes and 700 Mexicans were taken captive. Sam Houston forced Santa Anna to sign a tereaty and even though the Mexican congress did not accept the treaty the Texans had won.

    This was the treaty that ended the Mexican war. The congress of Mexico never offical accepted the treaty but it did carry over. After the war ended the us gained the land Californa and New Mexico. The United States payed Mexico 15 million dollars for these land grants. President James K Polk expressed the idea of Manifest Destiny during this time.

    Treaty of Fort Laramie Signed.
    As Settlers began moving across the great planes, they grew fearful of Native American attacks. The events of this were rare however. But as more settlers began moving across the plains the Natives grew worried. To more likely ensure peace, the federal government negotiated the Treaty of Fort Laramie, which gave territory to the Native Americans.
