Northwest Ordinance of 1787
The Northwest Territory was the first organized territory of the US. It is the most important legislation that congress has passed with regard to American public domain lands. The Northwest Ordinance prohibited slavery. This gave the US territory rights northwest of the Ohio River. -
Louisiana Purchase
France gianed Louisiana from Spain. US needed access to New Orleans. The US bought Louisiana from France for $15 million and it doubled the size of the US. -
Treaty of 1818
Set the border with Canada. Did not touch Oregon. -
Florida Purchase
Treaty between the US and Spain that gave west Florida to the US and set a boundary between the US and New Spain. Called the Adams-Onis treaty. -
Monroe Doctrine
European non-colonization and non-intervention of the Americas. It is issued most directly to Russia. It applied to all European nations. -
Indian Removal Act
Moved native american tribes living east of the mississippi river to lands west of the river. this was a policy of ethnic cleansing. -
Texas declared independence
Texas wanted to be free from Mexico. Texas gained Battle of San Jacinto. -
Election of 1844
James Polk defeats Henry Clay. The US is going to gain Oregon, Texas, and California. -
Texas Annexation
The citizens didn't want Texas to be a slave holding region. They favored the annexation of the Lone Star Republic by the US. -
Discovery of gold in California
People came to California from the rest of the US. At first gold could be picked up off the ground. -
Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo
America gets land. Mexican session. US pays $15 million. -
Compromise of 1850
FIve seperate bills in the US which difused a four year confrontation between the slave states of the south and free states of the north. -
The Transcontinental Railroad is Completed
The Union Pacific Railroad is completed and the Central Pacific Railroads meet at Promontory, Utah. Railroad is completed. -
Settlement of the West
People wanted to settle west to get wealthy off of the land and crops they would grow. They wanted to escape slavery and racism. They also wanted to spread democracy through the West. People stopped there lives and sold everything to seek gold in CA.
