Makayla's Timeline

  • Birth

    Birth
This is a special day because it is the day that I was born, and the day my life timeline began.
  • 9/11

    9/11
To be honest, I don't remember where I was or what I was doing when 9/11 happened. I was barely a year old, however, 9/11 has always been an event that was talked about growing up in school.
  • Obama's Inauguration

    Obama's Inauguration
This is an event I remember pretty clearly. At my elementary school we had done a mock election with the 5th graders to try and understand the real election that was going on that we couldn't have a say in at ages 9 and 10. When Obama won the election I also remember how excited everyone was to have our first president of color in office, especially because there is a huge ethnic population similar to that of Obama in my hometown.
  • Hurricane Sandy

    Hurricane Sandy
Hurricane Sandy was one of the most destructive hurricanes that has ever hit during the Atlantic hurricane season. I remember this storm fairly well because of my 7th grade science class. We were studying clouds during this time and every single day we had to go outside and make observations about the types of clouds there were in the sky. We got a lot of rain that time of year and my teacher always talked about how it was from Hurricane Sandy in the Atlantic. (Lasted until Nov. 2nd)
  • Grandparents leave Michigan

    Grandparents leave Michigan
This was a very sad time because my favorite grandparents, the ones who helped raise me when I was little, left for Arkansas. They have been living there now for about 8 years and it has been really hard being away from them. My grandma is one of my bestfriends, so I hate not having her around, but I am very thankful for the time I spent with her for the first 13 years of my life.
  • My commitment to Christ!

    My commitment to Christ!
This photo was taken the day after my baptism at my home church. I had my baptism out on a private lake around 9pm that Saturday. Earlier in the month my family and I had experienced a traumatic death of a really close family friend of ours. He was 19 and just finished his first year at Cornerstone University. After his death, I became more interested in baptism and wanted to take that step toward making my faith my own. Dakota's life had such an impact on me. He, and God, are why I'm here.
  • A new sister?

    A new sister?
This picture is from our first trip together as a family to Tennessee. My sister, Raiven, had officially became apart of our family in 2016. She had already been living with us on and off, but come 2016 she decided to move out of her biological parents' home and come to ours for good. Having a new sister since the age of 16 has had its ups and its downs, but I definitely couldn't imagine our family without her.
  • Trump VS Refugees

    Trump VS Refugees
President Trump had stated that he only wanted 30,000 refugees to be allowed in the US per year starting in 2019. This was a huge problem and caused an uproar in America because the original number of refugees allowed in the states was 45,000 per year. This led to a lot of controversial conversation in my community back home and also caused tensions to rise in relationships with friends and family.
  • A new brother, too?

    A new brother, too?
This photo is from our family trip to the UP in July 2020. Terrell came to us in October 2019, and I took that very hard. I already hated sharing my parents at times, especially my mom, with my sister Raiven. So the idea of having a new sibling really hurt for a while, but I couldn't say no to giving someone a loving home who needed it. Terrell no longer lives with us, which is a complicated story, but it was the longest year of my life and one of the hardest years my family has faced.
  • COVID-19 Pandemic

    COVID-19 Pandemic
This was not a good time for a lot of people, but COVID also severely effected me as well. The depression that set in during quarantine, from going to a busy life to nothing at all, and even getting COVID in the fall - it was one hectic time. I know we are still in the midst of the pandemic and in the midst of making history, but this event is still one that has been very impactful on my life as well as many others across the globe.
  • See you soon, Mags.

    See you soon, Mags.
My family and I recently said goodbye to our family dog Maggie this year. After 15 years with my best pal it really took a toll on me. My dad and I took it the hardest, but it was hard for everyone. It's weird not having her lay at my feet while I'm watching tv or hear her hit the trashcan as she runs into our kitchen to chase a toy we threw for her, but I have some of the happiest life memories with her. She may be gone, but definitely will never be forgotten.
  • Assignment Reflection

5 reasons why this is a good assignment for SS:
    1. It would help me get to know my students better
    2. It would help my students get to know one another, which could then help friendships form based on interest / life events
    3. Students would be more aware of the historic events that have taken place in or before their lifetime
    4. Knowledge of historical events will help build curiosity of SS before the school year gets started
    5. Students can be more culturally aware - how life impacts others
