Battle of Fort Sumter
The Battle of Fort Sumter was the bombardment of Fort Sumter near Charleston, South Carolina. This battle happened on April 12 to April 13th, 1861. When Lincoln announced plans to resupply the fort, the Confederates knew they had to take action. The battle was a 34 hour exchange of artillery fire. In the end the fort was surrendered. -
1st Battle of Bull Run
The First Battle of Bull Run was the first major battle of the American Civil War. It occurred on July 21st, 1861. Over 3000 Union soldiers died while only 1750 Confederate soldiers died. Northerns believed that it would be a fast and easy victory but that wasn’t right. It gave Southerners a false hope that they could pull of a swift victory. -
Battle of Richmond
The Battle of Richmond was fought on August 29 and 30th of 1862 in Richmond, Virginia. Richmond was the captain of the Confederate States during this time so it was a very hot spot. It put very experienced Confederate soldiers against very inexperienced Union soldiers. This resulted in a fast and easy Confederate victory. -
2nd Battle of Bull Run
The 2nd Battle of Bull Run was fought from August 29th to August 30th in 1862. It was fought in Prince William County, Virginia. It was a decisive victory for the rebels despite the over 9000 deaths for the Confederates. General Lee managed a strategic offensive against an enemy force that was twice the size of his own.. -
Battle of Antietam
The Battle of Antietam was a war fought on September 17, 1862. This was a very gruesome, bloody, and open battle. The importance of this battle is that it ended the Confederate invasion of Maryland. It also led to President Lincoln issuing the Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation. -
Battle of Gettysburg
The Battle of Gettysburg was fought from July 1st to 3rd in 1863. It is known as one of the the bloodiest battles ever. It was fought in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. This battle is also known as the “turning point” of the Civil War.
