Major Events in Arab-Israeli Relations

    1948 War
    Israel declared independence. Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, and Iraq attacked Israel.
    Israel gained land. Egypt gained the Gaza strip and Jordan gained the West Bank and East Jerusalem. Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians and Jews became refugees.

    Israel gained land from Egypt, Jordan, and Syria. Israel was open to returning other open territories in exchange for peace and recognition. Shortly after the end of this battle Egyptian President made it clear his intention to retake by force territory captured by Israel in the battle.
  • Settlement Construction Begins

    Settlement Construction Begins
    Israel government approved the building of settlements in the Sinai, Gaza and the West Bank. The first settlements were intended to act as security outposts and to prevent attacks or major population center bombings. Jews from around the world started migrating to Israel creating a demand for housing and space.

    Egypt blocked Israel. Egypt, Jordan, Syria and Iraq moved troops to Israel's borders and made threatening statements. Israel launched a preemptive strike. Israel captured the West Bank and East Jerusalem from Jordan, the Golan Heights from Syria, and the Gaza Strip and all of the Sinai Peninsula from Egypt. More Palestinians and Jews became refugees. Terrorism became more common.

    The October War or Yom Kippur War
    Egypt and Syria attacked Israel on Yom Kippur. After initial Arab military successes, the Israelis managed to push back the attack. The U.S. convinced Israel to withdraw from the territories it had entered. This came as a blow to Israel and shook its roots which were thought to be strong. The effects of the war brought significant changes to Israel in terms of other countries.

    Egypt and Israel Sign a Peace Agreement
    Egypt became the first Arab country to recognize Israel and to enter into a peace treaty with it. This established a framework for peace between Egypt and Israel.

    The 1982 Lebanon War
    PLO units in southern Lebanon increasingly attacked communities in northern Israel. Israeli troops advanced as far as Beirut and succeeded in expelling the PLO leadership from Lebanon to Tunisia.     Palestinian in the Gaza strip and the West Bank engaged in an uprising, or intifada against Israeli control of these territories. Palestinians attack Israelis with improvised weapons and firearms from the PLO. Establishment of Palestinian authority. The PLO started recognizing Israel.

    A set of agreements that began in 1993 when Israel and the PLO signed a Declaration of Principles. This led to the creation of the Palestinian authority. Created a Palestinian interim self government. This also created the Israel defense forces from the Gaza strip and West Bank.

    Israel and Jordan Sign a Peace Treaty
    Treaty between Egypt, and Israel. The U.S. lead a difficult but successful diplomatic process to help Jordan and Israel achieve peace. Settled relations between the two countries adjusted land and water disputes, and provided cooperation in tourism and trade.

    Bill Clinton brought Israeli Prime minister Ehud Barak and Palestinian President Yasser Aratant to camp David in July 2000. This was the first major attempt to negotiate a comprehensive final status agreement between Israel and the Palestinians. The talk failed to reach agreement on the final status issues.
  • The Second Intifada

    Many Palestinians claimed that Sharon's visit was productive and began to riot. The conflict caused bloodshed and suffering on both sides. There was a decrease of violence in the West Bank Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip.

    During the Beirut Summit of the Arab league, crown prince Abdullah of Saudi Arabia proposed a peace initiative that was addressed by all members of the Arab league. Israel welcomed the proposal but does not accept all of it's demands. Especially rejects the demand that it withdraw to the pre - 1967 borders.

    Israek decided to build a security barrier that would seperate its citizens from terrorist groups in the West Bank. This fence decreased the number of suicide bombings. The fence started getting criticized for dividing some Palestinians from their land. This effected the number of suicide bombings.

    The Roadmap for Peace is Proposed
    A plan for peace that was protected in 2003 by the "Quartet" The U.S., Russia, European Union united nations divided into three phased but has never progressed past the first. Negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian Authority became possible again when the Palestinian president Mahamad Abbas dissolved the government controlled by Hamas.

    Israel Disengages from Gaza
    The physical separation of Israel from Palestinian territories. Ariel Sharon determined that Israel should withdraw from the Gaza Strip. Israel decided to remove itself from this territory so that Palestinians living there could govern themselves.

    Palestinians elected a majority of Hamas members to the Palestinian Authority's legislature over the PLO's Fatah party that previously had power. Many Western nations imposed sanctions and suspended aid to the Palestinian authority.
  • The 2006 Lebanon War

    The 2006 Lebanon War
    Hezbollah crossed the Lebanon - Israel border and attacked an Israel army unit, killing eight soldiers and kidnapping two more that were later murdered. Loss of civilians lives as well as property damage when Israel retaliated.

    Hamas militants attacked Fatah members throughout Gaza. In response the Palestinian Authority president Mahamoud Abbas, dissolved the Hamas government. Hamas controls Gaza and the palestinian authority controls the West Bank.

    Israel attacked Hamas targets in Gaza in an attempt to stop rocket attacks on southern Israel and to disrupt terrorist infrastructure and weapon smuggling. Many civilian casualties and Gaza's buildings and economy were heavily damaged.

    Six ships set sail to break the blockade when they inspected the ship they attacked with knives and iron bars. The cargo was subsequently inspected and permitted goods were shipped into Gaza.
