Louis XIV was in his early twenties when Jules Mazarin passed away. Louis could've had all the power to rule but didn't want to question Mazarin. Many doubted he would assume responsibility and those who did were proven wrong. Louis took full responsibility of France. -

Louis was a very passionate catholic and cancels the Edict of Nantes which was created to promote civil unity and protection to protestants ( Huguenots). This caused French economy to slow down and also caused many people to flee the country. -
