William Golding

  • First Novel

    When William Golding was around the age of 12, he began writing his first novel. He ended up being unsuccessful, leading him to start bullying his peers to release his anger.
  • First book publishing

    Once William Golding graduated and went off to college, he decided to get into English Literature instead of science like his father wanted. A year before graduating he published his first book, a book of poetry.
  • Teaching

    Once William graduated college he began working in settlement homes and theaters. But eventually decided to go after his dad, and began teaching English and philosophy. His teaching experience later influenced him writing "Lord of the Flies."
  • Marriage

    William got married to Ann Brookfield and they ended up having two kids, David B. and Judith B.
  • Joining the Navy

    Even though William loved teaching and had a large passion for teaching, he ended up leaving to join the Royal Navy and fighting in World War II. While being there his love for the sea and sailing grew since he had to fight battleships. He says that going through that let him learn what people are actually capable of doing.
  • After War

    Once World War II was over, William decided to go back to teaching and writing.
  • "Lord of the Flies"

    William Golding began writing "Lord of the Flies" in 1954 but was rejected 24 times before being able to actually publish it. He was able to publish his first and most acclaimed novel. This novel spoke about a group of teenage boys who had to fight to survive when they got stranded on a deserted island, and showed what people are capable of doing to survive.
  • Film adaptation

    The year after William Golding retired from teaching, Peter brook made a film adaptation about "Lord of the Flies".
  • Nobel Prize

    Two decades after the first film adaptation William Golding was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature when he was 73 years old.
  • New Film Version

    After almost 30 years from the first film adaptation, A new Film Version was made about "Lord of the Flies" making the book more popular again.
  • Death

    After all this William decided to spend his last few years peacefully with his wife. In June 1993, William Golding passed away because of a heart attack in Perranarworthal, Cornwall .
