Literacy Timeline - Brian Riesen

  • Pre-Elementary

    Pre-Elementary
I remember one of my parents would read to me everynight before bed. I still fondly remember many of the books we read. Cloudy with a Chance of meatballs was my favorite.
  • Elementary School

    Elementary School
In elementary, I often read books for enjoyment. I really like Roald Dahl, "Encyclopedia Brown", and as I got older, Greek Mythology.
  • Jr. High School

    Jr. High School
By the time I was in junior high, I really did not read for pleasure anymore. Any reading was to complete school assignments, and often I did not complete the reading, and instead listened during classroom discussions to understand what happened in the book. I particularly remember having Romeo and Juliet assigned for reading, but I just could not get into it.
  • High School

    High School
High school was similar to junior high. Any reading was only for school, not for pleasure. I still only read the minimum necessary to pass the unit, often not reading the entire book.
  • Air Force

    Air Force
I joined the Air Force in the summer of 1999 after graduating from high school. After completing training, I was at my first base in early 2000. There I was assigned my Career Development Course, which was a 3 volume book teaching about various systems and components on an aircraft work. I was forced to read through these and pass the test covering the material. My learning style is not by reading but rather by seeing so I really did not get a lot out of this course.
  • Air Force Instructor

    Air Force Instructor
In 2006 I recieved orders sending me to Sheppard AFB to be a Technical Training Instructor. While I was not able to create the curriculum I taught, I had freedom to explain it in a way that made sense to me. As a hands on learner, i realized that just reading the information from the lesson plan was not enough, but that I also had to make the information relatable to the students coming through my classes.
  • Studies in Fiction class

    Studies in Fiction class
After moving to Wichita Falls in 2006, I enrolled at Wayland Baptist University to work towards a bachelor's degree. I particularly remember an English course I took where we broke down different literary devices authors used such as symbolism. I think that this was an eye-opening clss for me becuase for so much of my education I had not really read. I found myself reading the stories for class and enjoying them.
  • The Road

    The Road
I'm not sure where I got the recommendation to read this book but once I started reading I could not put it down. This had never happened with a book for me before. I had tried to read other books, but just could never get into them. This book was different and it help spark my interists in finding other goods that would hold my attention.
  • iPhone

    iPhone
Sometime around 2014 I started keeping a list in my phone of books that I had heard about or seen that sounded interesting. Before this, I used little scraps of paper or sticky notes but would often lose them. By keeping the list in my phone I was ably to quickly write down the author and title of a book without having to worry about losing the paper or not having a pen
  • The Martian

    The Martian
I remember seeing he previews for this movie and being very interested. I went and got the book as the movie came out. This was another book that I could not put down. It helped remind me that there are books out there that interist me, I just have to search to find them. Once I finished the book, I went and saw the movie. I still find myself looking at upcoming movies to try and find books that I want to read.
