Literacy timeline

  • Rouesseau

    • Felt that early education for children should be natural, should only learn things as they are developmentally ready.
    • Adults should have little intervention
    • Learn through curiosity
  • Pestalozzi

    • Believed in natural learning, but felt that there needed to be a little formal instruction (for reading etc.)
    • Suggested children learning through sensory and manipulative experiences (touch, smell, language, size, and shape.)
  • Sensorimotor/Preoperational/Concreate operational/ Formal operations

Sensorimotor (0-2) - Baby hears, sees, tastes and feels
    Preoperational (2-7) - Language development
Concrete Operational (7-11) - Moves into abstract ideas
    Formal Operations (11-adult)
  • Vgotsky

Schema-- New concepts which are mental structures where people store information.
    - When children interact with those who provide feedback, they are able to acquire new concepts and information.
    Scaffolding-
    - Directs a child's attention to what they need to know and do.
    - Parents and teachers who are more knowledgeable should scaffold by modeling to children what completing a new task looks like.
  • Constructivism & Whole language

Various subjects can be taught with real life lessons.
    - Lessons can veer from the curriculum.
-Holistic strategies, more emphasis on learning than teaching.
  • emergent literacy

    • Exposes children to books early
    • Social interaction and problem solving is emphasized with less direction of skills
    • Phrased was first used by Miarie Clay
    • Assumes that the child acquires some knowledge about reading or writing before coming to school
    • Begins very early on in life
  • Balanced Literacy

    ● No single method can teach every child to read
    ● Teachers should know the intellectual status of each child
    ● Teachers should know different strategies for teaching children
    ● Use the best strategy for each individual child
  • Research Era

    • They investigated ECLD by looking at the cognitive development of the child using different methodologies like
      • Experimental Studies with treatment and control groups
      • Correlational Research
      • Interviews
      • Observations
      • Video Tapes
      • Case Studies
