I remember walking into the classroom of kindergarten, with all the bright vibrant colors. Letters detailed in exasperating colors, spread throughout the entire classroom. Some familiar, some vague. The feeling was overwhelming for sure, but it was exciting at the same time. I mostly remember the class room covered in the alphabet, on the walls, rugs, boards and even tables.

From when I was a toddler, I had always had trouble comprehending, and communicating. My mother has taken me to multiple tests to try to resolve the issue but no one really helped. 1st Grade came around finally, my 1st Grade teacher Mrs. Paolino actually saw the issue. My mother found it to be a miracle because she was the first to listen to and understand my mother. At first I was completely confused but Mrs. Miller guided me through my challenges, and actually helped me succeed!

Reading and comprehension was a problem I faced constantly in elementary school. I remember in second grade, being pulled out of class, not to speech class, but to a reading group. Mrs. Sasso, an old lady who took groups of 4-6 kids for about 45 minutes. She took this 45 minutes to read, and comprehend with kids who struggled, me. I used to be embarrassed quite often between speech, and this reading group, but it did benefit me as I look back and it was fun!

This year was the hardest year for me. Reading was the worst, it was gibberish. I spent hours reading with my parents and practiced comprehension. I would cry every night because of how "dumb" I thought I was. All my friends could read and answer questions but I couldn't. Chapter books was a major struggle because there was no visual, so I couldn't envision the who, what, when, where, why, and how. As the years went by, it became more challenging. But in the end, It just took time and practice

Reading definitely got better. I remember when I was in Carrigan the book Wonder came out. It was a summer reading book, and I read it! It was like one of the first chapter books that I actually enjoyed. It boosted my confidence in reading. I also remember watching the movie too! It was an overall great book, because I somewhat related to Auggie. He was different, just like me. Yes he has a deformity, but I felt different because of my skin and its complexion.

March of 2020 was when COVID-19 hit. That was like a reset button for everyone, especially students. School was out, and online work was 5 minutes all together, there was no benefit. Even in 8th grade, back in school, but still going through the virus had everyone on edge. Leniency was basically playing computer games on the Chromebooks. But I did get into some S.E. Hinton books after reading The Outsiders. I had nothing else to do but read and expand my craftiness. Overall my skill increased.

I made it into Honors classes! My Honors English was merged with my Social studies class. The book, All Quiet on the Western Front was a book that was read and followed by an essay that was graded together for the two classes. This was one of my first challenges in high school, reading and comprehension tied together for the majority of my grade. I was petrified but I took it easy. The grade I received, showed my improvement in reading/ comprehension. I was excited and motivated.

Last year, Mrs. Plumey was one of the best classes I have ever had. Her class has made me appreciate English. I've never learned so much in a class that actually benefited me. Her class is definitely what motivated me to take AP English this year. I loved how deep and honest readings got along with the questions. There was a lot of work last year, but it was worth it all! Her class has totally peaked my reading and comprehension skills to where it is today. And I can't wait to continue!
