    Jeanne Chall
    Chall changed the way students learn to read with her belief in direct instruction. She also encouraged teachers to focus more on underprivileged students who had a harder time in school.

    Kathryn Au
    Au was an advocate for culturally responsive instruction. This means that she believed in using cultural knowledge, prior experiences, and performance styles of diverse students makes learning more appropriate and effective because it teaches to the strengths of students.
  • Creation of 504 Plans

    Creation of 504 Plans
    504 plans were created to give students with disabilities the support they need in order to be succesful in a classroom setting. These plans give students accomodations like extra time on tests, the use of speech-to-text, and/or modified assignments.
  • Creation of IEP's (Individualized Education Plan)

    Creation of IEP's (Individualized Education Plan)
    After the creation of the Education For All Handicapped Children, IEP's were created to help students with disabilities be successful in a school environment. This helps them become more successful than they overwise would be with their reading and writing.
  • No Child Left Behind Act

    No Child Left Behind Act
    The No Child Left Behind Act focused on students of color, students experiencing poverty, and students in special education. After this law was passed in 2002, schools had to test their students every year to make sure they were meeting their education goals. If they didn't, the school was penalized.
  • Every Student Succeeds Act

    Every Student Succeeds Act
    Barrack Obama replaced the Every Student Succeeds Act with the No Child Left Behind Act in 2015. Its goal is to ensure that students who have a difficult time in school are able to succeed through its creation of state-by-state academic plans. This act also gives funding to literacy programs in America.
