  • 3000 BCE

    Southern Mesopotamia Circa

    Ancient Sumerians created the first writing system, cuneiform script, when they started writing on clay tablets with simple symbols. This later turned into complete scripts and modern language ("The Evolution," 2021).

    Printing Press

    Johannes Guttenberg invented the printing. This allowed literacy to become opportunity for everyone, which boosted the Renaissance ("The Evolution," 2021).

    Anti-literacy Laws in the United States

    Anti-literacy laws in the United States made it impossible for Black Americans who were slaves, or sometimes free, to learn how to read and write. White individuals believed that if the enslaved learned how to read and write, it would affect slavery as these individuals would be more inclined to escape ("Literacy By Any", 2024).
  • Maria Montessori

    Montessori believed in child-centered learning where children learn best when they are in control of their learning and are able to chose what they want to learn. She believed in hands on learning and collaborative play ("Early Childhood Education", n.d.).
  • Lev Vygotsky's Sociocultural Theory

    Vygotsky believed that for a child's development, social interactions are extremely important. He claimed that children working with those who are older than them, improve the child's cognitive development ("Early Childhood Education", n.d.).
  • The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)

    IDEA is a federal law that provides free services to student with disabilities that is tailored to their individual needs ("Individuals with Disabilities", n.d.).
