Literacy Process

  • First year of reading

    First year of reading
Mother started reading to me right away. That was how she bonded with me from the beginning. Goodnight Moon was her favorite thing to read to me at bedtime
  • Sounding out Words

    Sounding out Words
By the age of four, I was already reading Dr. Seuss books on my own for the most part. My mother looked over my shoulder to help me with the made up words, and encouraged sounding the words out.
  • Independently Reading

    Independently Reading
By 1st grade, I was reading independently. My favorite memory that kept feeding my interest in reading, was the weekly trips to the library with my grandmother. After the library, we would sit in her recliners and read the day away, side by side.

    Spelling Tests

All through elementary school, we were constantly doing spelling tests. I was always getting 100% on all my writing/spelling quizzes. Being this good at the tests naturally, encouraged me to write my own short stories when I got my own computer.
  • Animal Crossing

    Animal Crossing
This quickly became my favorite game to play on the GameCube. I loved trying to read the words on the screen while listening to the animalese the characters were speaking to see how close their sounds were to the actual words. This kept me reading, even when I didn't have my nose in a book.
  • Spongebob Typing

    Spongebob Typing
My stepdad brought home a spongebob game that helped me learn my home keys on the keyboard. I ended getting a lot of typing practice and can type quickly and effectively with very minimal errors. This helped me in all the jobs I've worked over the years as an adult, especially in the medical field.
  • High School Creative Writing

    High School Creative Writing
Creative Writing my freshman year. Stories came naturally to me. This class really lit a new passion for me and I was very invested in taking this high school class seriously.
  • Hunger Games

    Hunger Games
My grandmother bought the trilogy once all three (at the time) books were released. She read all of them, gave them to me, and told me when I finished reading all three, we were going to go out to lunch together and I was going to tell her about the plot, the characters, and my favorite/least favorite parts of all the books. That way she knew if I actually read them or not. She noticed I lost my reading interest temporarily.
  • AP Literature

    AP Literature
This teacher made this class so much fun, even through stories that took a lot of brain width to understand, he made it interesting. He recommended a lists of books for me at the end of the year to read during the summer because he knew how interested I was in the class. I read all summer thanks to him.

    Becoming a Mother

I became a first time mother. I read to him in the NICU every day, his entire almost three month stay. I still, a second kid later, read to both of my children (oldest is 5, baby is 1) every single night. I'm also currently teaching my 5 year old how to sound out words to read and write, and do flashcards with the baby.
