My timeline of Literacy Process

  • Age 2

    Age 2
    Having been introduced to books by my parents at a young age, I developed a love of storytelling. They used to read me a lot of bed time books which I loved.
  • Age 4

    Age 4
    During my preschool years, I learned basic phonics and letter recognition through interactive activities and games in a preschool. I also took extra classes in Kumon to help me with my reading.
  • Age 6

    Age 6
    I started formal education and began learning Arabic. In English and Arabic, I began to read simple sentences and write short stories. It took me a long time to learn English because my parents were not good at the language and spoke Arabic most of the time.
  • Age 10

    Age 10
    I was inspired to join a book club my English teacher recommended for me to improve my literacy. We were able to meet every month after finishing reading a book to discuss it.
  • Age 14

    Age 14
    To improve my writing, I joined a creative writing class at the age of 14. A passion for storytelling was sparked by positive feedback from my high school teacher.
  • Age 15

    Age 15
    I began studying a third language, which broadened my linguistic abilities and widened my understanding of the American Sign Language.
  • Age 16

    Age 16
    I started teaching reading and writing at Kumon, which taught me how much I value literacy and math. I worked every Saturdays with little kids so they can improve with there grammer.
  • Age 17

    Age 17
    My first step in pursuing higher education was to enroll in an English class in college, which helped refine my writing skills as well as my ability to analyze and explain essays.
  • Age 18

    Age 18
    I was able to observe both students and teachers during an internship in an Elementary School when I was 18 years old. I loved working with the kids and being able to watch them grow.
  • Age 19 (now)

    Age 19 (now)
    Currently, I am finishing up my last semester of studying at HCC and taking five classes to improve as a teacher and writer. Hopefully, I get to learn more in this process & acquisition reading class.
