  • State anti-literacy law

    In South Carolina the 1793 Negro Act prohibited slaves from being taught how to read and write.
  • McGruffey Readers

    A series of books designed to teach reading to school aged students ranging in age.
  • Thorndike

    Wrote a book entitled "Read as Reasoning." Thorndike has a huge influence of how reading has developed today. Of the belief that reading is critical for certain behaviors. He believed reading is essential for certain behavioral responses.
  • Reading Comprehension Test

    This test was created in order to measure the level and the speed of student. The score was based on the understanding that the student displayed based on their performance on the test. It was also based on evaluating how much information the student was actually retaining. The test measured 9 skills, and the results indicated the level at which the student should be placed into within the classroom setting.
  • Brown vs. Board of Education

    A Supreme Court case in which the court declared laws separating public schools by color was a violation of the 14th Amendment. This case is what began integration within schools.
  • National Defense Education Act

    Appropriated federal funding to help improve the instruction with reading, math, foreign language, and science.
  • Head Start Program

    Developed to promote infant and toddler literacy development. It was found that this could significantly improve the cognitive and socio-emotional development of low-income children.
  • Title I of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of1965

    To ensure that all children have equal opportunity to obtain a high-equality education through academics assessments.
  • Title IX

    States that no person in the U.S. is to be excluded from participation or be denied the benefits of, any federally funded education program based on sexual orientation.
  • Children's Literature Association

    Non profit organization that helps the academic advancement of student literature.
  • Writing in Elementary School

    Realization that writing had a positive outcome to the students when it came to literature.
  • Classroom Libraries

    Surrounding students with books within the classroom seemed to promote more reading. This accelerated their growth in reading skills by self motivation.
  • Reading Excellence Act

    Provides competitive grants to states to improve reading skills of students and the instructional practices of teachers of reading.
  • No Child Left Behind

    Based on the premise that setting the standards high could improve educational outcome.
  • RTI

    A multi-tier approach to the early identification and support of students with special needs.
  • Technology in the Classroom

    With the increase in technology within the classroom, teachers are now becoming more comfortable with allowing students to read off of screens.
