  • As A Child

    As A Child
As a child I went to my grandmothers daily and everyday she would read me a different book. She was an English major and loved to read and believes that reading will help you succeed.
  • 1st Grade

    1st Grade
In first grade I was having problems reading and wasn't at the same speed as the other children in my class so I was sent to my schools reading specialists and was in a year long program. I went everyday to the reading specialist (Mrs. Phealen) and worked on reading.
  • The End of 1st Grade

    The End of 1st Grade
At the end of first grade I was doing so well in the program. The reading specialist and my schools principal took me to ISU to demonstrate how well the reading program has work for me. At the beginning of the program I was reading at a kindergarten level but by the end of the school year I was tested at a fifth grade reading level. That program really helped me succeed in reading and literacy.
  • Dance Class

    Dance Class
I began dance class at the age of three and danced until I was fourteen years old. During that time I began to be very literate in dance vocabulary and what certain steps and movement meant. https://youtu.be/S_UwNe3cFLw
  • Middle School

    Middle School
In middle school I became literate in math by learning different terms and sign meanings in math. For example ( > means that a number is greater then another number, and < means that a number is less then another number)
  • My First Cellphone

    My First Cellphone
When I got my first cellphone I was excited, I remember wanting to text all of the time I loved it and quickly became familiar in texting lingo. For example, words like "lol" or "hbu"
  • Social Media

    Social Media
In high school social media played a big role in my life. Growing up everyone had a social media site like Facebook or Myspace. Social media took over my life and I stopped spending much needed time reading.
  • Highschool Mentor

    Highschool Mentor
When I was a senior in high school I was a mentor to students from surrounding school areas. Being a mentor was challenging at first because I had to learn to talk to students who were close in age to me as a professional. I also had to make sure that I keep the relationship of the students and I on a mentor level.

    Nannying two pre-teen boys.
While i was nannying two boys over the summer they were on a baseball team, which for me meant a lot of driving them back and forth to games and practices. I didn't know much about baseball but I had to quickly become literate in the rules and sayings of baseball. For example "Can of Corn" means easy play and "Now you've seen it!" is the use for when the batter takes their first strike
  • College

    College
As a junior in college I've began to fall in love with reading again. I went through times where I never made time for reading. Now that I'm older I wish I would've read a lot more in high school. Everyone knows now not to bother me while I'm reading or they might see a different side of me. Reading means so much to me and I understand the benefits of reading.
