Linus Learns to Program in BASIC
Linus learns to use the Commodore Vic 20 his grandfather owned. Linus becomes bored with it as it has limited programs, so he learns to program in BASIC to develop his own programs. -
Military training program
Linus completes his military training program for the required military service in Finland. He achieves the rank of second lieutenant when he is done. -
Linux is born
Linus was disatisfied with the Microsoft Operating system and greatly preferred UNIX. Though Unix was much too expensive to be able to get on his personal computer. The other alternative was MINIX, which was a UNIX clone used to teach UNIX to students, but it was lacking in certain aspects and Linus saw it contained disadvantages. So he set out to develop his own operating system based on UNIX and MINIX. -

Linus updates his Linux Operatin System to have greater performance, be able to work using more processor options, and support symmetric multiprocessing, which is to have multiple processors processing programs under one operating system. -

Linux ends up attracting many computer users and by this time over 3 million users have their computers running Linux. -

Linus becomes employee of Transmeta and develops software that facilitates use between operating systems and processors. At the same time, Linus is given permission to work on Linux and improve it. Linux fans criticized Linus for working at a for-profit business while Linux and his beliefs were suppose to represent open source and free. -

Linus recieves his first award recognizing him of his work involving Linux. -
Linus Makes it big with stocks
Two Linux based software companies :Red Hat and VA Linux, presented Linus with stocks in their companies as a way to thank him in his work of giving the world Linux. The stocks would be valued at about $20 million shortly after the companies went public. -

Linus Trademarks the name Linux, so as a way to police and keep Linux unassoaciated with negative representation by other individuals. -
Linus Begins working at Open Suurce Development Labs
Linus ends his work at Transmeta, and joins the Open Source Development Labs to work on Linux and help expand its development. Open Source Development Labs (as it was called) was a non-profit organization aimed at progressing the devlopment of Linux. -
