  • The White Stallion

    The White Stallion
In 1st grade, I discovered the book The White Stallion, which was the first book that got me hooked on reading. It was a simple story, but I fell in love with the way the words drew pictures in mind.
  • Patrick Henry Speech

    Patrick Henry Speech
My all time favorite teacher, Mrs. Henderson, had our class memorize Patrick Henry's "Give me liberty, or give me death!" speech. We had to dress up like him and give our speech with gusto. I remember how history came alive while I was memorizing it because I had to think about the words deeply and what people during the time period were facing. Plus, it was fun to dress up!
  • Oregon Trail Journal

    Oregon Trail Journal
In 5th grade, my English teacher, Mrs. Howard, had our class keep a journal on the Oregon Trail. We drew prompts everyday that would give us stuff to write about, such as, "Your milk cow died." We had to think about what people faced during this long journey and how things just unexpectly happened. I fell in love with the assignment and took it to heart. Mrs. Howard photo copied my journal and still reads it to her students as an example of how fun the assignment can be!
  • Bad Science Test

    Bad Science Test
I remember getting a D on a very big exam in science. My teacher, Mr. Taylor, said he was very dissapointed in me. That was my first and only D on test because he made me feel so ashamed and dissapointed. He didn't sound sorry or concerned. He just sounded mean. To this day, I don't enjoy science.

    Descriptive Essay
In 8th grade, we were asked to write a descrptive essay on an event in our life. I had recently been in a car accident with my dad, so I wrote about my vivid memories. I loved seeing my words come to life on the page and painting mental pictures. That assignment futurered my love for writing.
  • Failed Summer Work

    Failed Summer Work
On the first day of senior year, I received a 42 on my summer project work. I read a book and created some type of pictorial project with descriptions on it. I had put a lot of effort into the project, much more than most of my peers. The teacher told me that nothing was wrong with my project, but she couldn't read my handwriting, so she gave me a F. I went home, typed everything out, and redid my project for the next day. I then received a 76. I never trusted that teacher again.
