Evaluating for ADHD at age 6
At the age of 6, Mykel's first grade teacher held a conference due to Mykel being disruptive in class. She suggested that Mykel should be evaluated for ADHD by a pediatrician. ADHD is also know as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. Someone has ADHD when they are unable to concentrate, pay attention, and have sudden outbursts of hyperactivity. This disorder can be evaluated in the midst of childhood or once a child starts their education and can't pay attention or is very active.(pp.297) -
Stay Stylish At 14
Mykel has been very interested in his appearance and wants to wear certain styles of shoes, clothes, and hair. At around his age, majority of the money earned or saved goes towards movie tickets, clothes, shoes, and all of the latest trends ( pg. 384). Although, in order for Mykel to stay in with the trends, he must first earn money by doing more chores and pay for his own clothes and entertainment. -
14 Years Old and Viewing Porn
Mykel, whom is 14 years old, was caught viewing sexual content and downloading porn videos on the home computer. Although it may sound odd for a 14 year old to be viewing such inappropriate content, it is completely normal. Almost 90% of males and 30% of females view pornography on the internet. More than half of the male and females view pornography as acceptable. (pp. 446 - 447) -
Understanding the Religion of Others
Religion is something that varies from person to person. Mykel was speaking with a classmate about religion and politics and they came to many disagreements. There could be many reasons to why the disagreements appeared. They could've appeared because someone has religion as a lower priority than the other or don't have a religion at all (pg. 370). It is good that Mykel brought it up because it is important to know and understand his views as a parent. -
Sex At 16
Mykel was dating someone for 2 months and wasn't old enough to be rushing into a relationship, especially if it involved sex. The reason for that is because Mykel may not be aware of sexually transmitted infections. STIs are at a high during the emerging adulthood period which are passed through unprotected sex. Infections like HIV or AIDS are hard to treat and are deadly. (p. 440-441) Every individual should be aware of STIs while in a relationship. -
New Driver Behind the Wheel
At the age of 16, Mykel received his driver's license after 50 hours of driving and passing the tests. The driving instructor stated that he is a very careful driver. That is very good to hear because most teenagers are partially responsible for many car wrecks and accidents (pg. 410). Therefore, if Mykel drives the way he did with the instructor and myself, the chance of him getting into a wreck should be much lower. -
Drinking and Feeling Doozy
Mykel was out with friends at a party and around midnight, he calls for a ride home. His breath smelled like alcohol and he felt horrible the next day due to a headache. Mykel was displaying a normal weekend activity with his friends, but needs to be aware of the possible outcomes. Some of the possible outcomes of drinking can create aggressive fights and risky trips in automobiles (pg. 415). Mykel should know his limits and have self-control so bad outcomes do not occur. -
Declaring Independence Through A Tattoo
Mykel and his girlfriend got matching tattoos as way to express their independence. As an adolescent, expressing independence is normal. Teens do it to show that they are able to do things as they please without their family. Although, conflict may rise (pg. 372). Luckily, Mykel didn't get a tattoo that was large and in an open area. That would then lead to even greater consequences and regret. Getting a tattoo may have been a really bad idea to show how independent he is.
