In 1893 Gandhi travled to South Africa. He became the first "colored" lawyer.

In 1898 the Natal Indian Congress fought for more rights for Indian people. Gandhi still remained loyal to the British Empire.

In 1920 he started a noncooperation campaign against Britain. This allows Indians to boycott British goods, carts, and government. This protest led to Gandhi's imprisonment.

In 1930 Gandhi led 1,000 Indians on a 200 mile march. This was to protest salt tax. Later he was jailed for this.

In 1934 he retired as head of the party. He still remained its actual leader. He still did not have rights in the British Empire.

He was jailed again because he demanded independence. He demanded independence because he thought that was the least the British Empire could do after all the hard work India did to help out Britain.

On his way to pray Gandhi was killed by a Hindu who had been mad about the Mahatma’s efforts to reconcile Hindus and Muslims. There was a movie made about him later that won many awards.
