    Thomas Jefferson bought the Louisiana Purchase from France. No one knew how far the land went, so Lewis and Clark were hired to explore the land. They gathered up the Corps of Discovery and began in St. Louis, Missouri 1804.

    Lewis, Clark, and the Corps of Discovery encounted many hardships. These included sever weather, dangerous waters, snake bites, swarms of bugs, grizzly attacks,sickness, injuries, and starvation. They also built a fort called Fort Clatsop, and stayed for the winter.

    When Lewis and Clark returned they had covered 8,000 miles by foot, boat, and horseback. They also brought back useful information about the West.

    The Accomplishments of Lewis and Clark's Expedition
    In the end Lewis and Clark recorded details about 300 species and 50 Indian tribes. They also got information on the Rockies and reached the Continental Divide as well as the Pacific Ocean. The journey ended in Astoria, Oregon 1805.
