A Member Becomes Ill
Sergeant Charles Floyd became ill. He thought that hes was going to be fine. Floyd died and Clark handled it with a "Great deal of composure." -
Sioux Encounter
This is the first Indian Tribe that Lewis and Clark met upon embarking on their journey. From the beginnigng if the journey, they only lost one man. His name was sergeant Charles Floyd. The corps of Discovery would meet over 50 Native American tribes. They were the first white men that many of the Natives had ever seen. The natives were told that they now belonged to the United States. -
Expierence at Fort Mandan
Lewis and Clark built a fort in time for the winter at Mandan. As the winter passed, the were watching for any Sioux Indians that might happen to pass by.This is where Sacajawea joined the excursion. -
Peaceful Trading
Just North of Bismarck, North Dakota was where the Mandan and Hidatsas. There were 4,500 Indians living there. The expedition crew built a fort there and named it Fort Mandan -
A Baby Is Born
Sacagawea gave birth to Jean Baptiste Charbonneau. Lewis successfully delivers the baby. The recovery period was sped up by Lewis crushing a rattlesnake's rattleinto powder.Theyget back on track. -
Bear Encounter
The bear that Lewis and Clark saw weighed in at an estimated 600 pounds. It took 10 shots to kill the bear. Later, Lewis said that ist was a "most turrible looking animal" -
Treebark
Sacagawea proved useful along the trip. She showed the explorers that you could eat the bark of the Whitebark Pine tree. You can also eat the cones and the seeds -
Expierence with Shoshone Tribe
Lewis and Clark need horses badly to getthem through the mountains. The met up with the Shoshone Indians and they gave Lewis and Clark some horses. The chief of that Shoshone tribe happened to be Sacagawea's brother. His name was Cameahwait. -
Lewis expierences a Casualty
Meriwether Lewis had spotted an elk. The party went out to hunt for it. As Lewis was about to shoot, he ws hit in the buttocks by Private Cruzatte. Private Cruzatte was blind in one eye. -
Shoshone Tribe Help
The Shoshone tribe helped the expedition crew by providing them food and water. They gave them a place to stay and keep safe. Since they had only a slight idea of where to go. The Shoshone tribe helped guide them. -
Occurence In Idaho
Lewis and Clark were taught how to make canoes by Twisted Hair of the Nez Perce tribe. These were fresh canoes. The canoes were made and they went on their way to further their knowledge of the West.. -
Occurence at Clatsop
Fort Clatsop was the fort that Lewis and Clark built for the winter. They spent a long winter there. I was boring and they sat ther talking and helping the Indians. -
Bad Weather
In the Bitteroot Mountains, the exploration party took the Lolorail. This trailproved to be a steep and treacherous trail. The mountain is, at some places, 7,000 feet in height. -
An Indian is Killed
The Explorers camped with these Blackfeet Indians. In the morning the explorers caught the Indians trying to steal their supplies. They shot two INdians. This was the only act of bloodshed during the whole trip. Lewis leaves a peace medal around the neck of one of the courses.
