Member Dies
Sargent Charles Floyd died from appendicitis. This was the only death on the expedition. He died near present-day Sioux City, Iowa. -
Trees and Plants profoundly affect expedition
Joseph Field was bitten by a snake. Lewis used bark to treat the wound.The bark came from a Slippery Elm tree. -
Someone becomes Sick
Robert frazer probably suffered heat stroke. He was treated with blood eltting which probably made him worse. He did survive. -
Peacful Trade
Lewis met Oto Chief Litttle Thief and Chief Big Horse. The Oto were farmer-hunters. They talked trade and peace. -
Sioux Tribe
The Sioux were known for being aggressive. The Corps had an encounter that was tense. The encounter happend at present day Pierri, South Dakota. The meeting ended with a standoff. -
Fort Mandan
They started building the fort. It was a very cold winter. The fort was twelve males away from present-day Washburn, North Dakota. The fort was built with Cottonwood lumber -
Sacagaweas Baby
Jean Baptiste Charbonneau was born. He was Sacagawea's first baby. The baby was born in Fort Mandan North Dakota. -
Animals Profoundly affected expedition
They came across a 600 pound Grizzly bear. It was the largest they had ever seen. It took ten shots to kill it. -
Lemhi Pass
A group of the Corp came to Lemhi Pass. It was a two mile span crossing now present-day Montana and Idaho. They were the first Americans to cross the Continental Divide. -
Shoshone Tribe
Lewis and Clark needed horses from the shoshones to croos the Rockies. Lewis was scouting and met the shoshone being the first white man they had ever seen. He gave gifts and it was a peacful meeting. -
Aided
Lweis and Clark encountered the Palouse tribe. they helped Lewis and Clark along the Snake River. The Palouse lived in present-day eastern Washington and Northern Idaho. -
Fort Clatsop
The Corp departed from the fort. The Clastsop tribe was friendly, but because they were hard bargainers the parties supplies quickly depleted. Because of the wet coast weather it was difficult keeping dry. -
Weather profoundly affected the expedition
They had a Winter that only 12 days without rain. Fresh meat was hard to find. The men really struggled to stay dry. -
Killing
Marias river country was home to the Black Foot Indians. They met eight braves. The encounter was peacful at first, but later the Indians tried to steal rifles and horses. One Indian was shot and one was stabed, they both died.
