  • The Ohio Constitution 2.0

By the time the 1850's rolled around the people of Ohio felt it was time to update the constitution after its 5 decade run without change, the new document is 9,000 words long 50% more than the original constitution.
  • Vote to Update Constitution

In 1874 after the 73-74 constitutional convention, Ohioans voted on the adoption of a 3rd constitution. This new constitution included 15,000 words which was believed to be too many at the time, if only they could see us now. This was shot down by a vote of 250,169 to 102,884.

    Fine Additions to Ohio's collection.

During the 1910's Ohio had added the most to the constitution before the 21st century, they were getting busy adding in 40 amendments. Most of this growth was due to the 1912 constitutional convention which added 34 of the amendments and roughly 7,000 words in just that year.

    New Century, New Ohio

Ohio lawmakers are taking a different approach to writing laws, they added 10 amendments in this decade totaling 12,394 words. This added twice as many words to the constitution compared to the changes in the 1910's and in a quarter of the amendments. This shows that Ohio is changing how it writes laws, they are more thorough as to mitigate confusion.
