Run a mile in under 10 minutes by the end of the summer

  • It must be on your terms

I want to be able to run a mile in under 10 minutes because for my volleyball conditioning, My coach made a goal of the team as a whole running a mile in 12 minutes or less. "The most important thing to remember is that these are your goals, not your parent’s, your teacher’s, or anyone else’s." (Unit 2 iBook Section 4) A lot of my friends can run a mile in 10-11 minutes and I don't want to be left in the dust when we go on runs.
  • Connect goals to the ultimate currency: happiness!

Running a mile in under 10 minutes would make me happy because I would be able to keep up with all of my friends during conditioning and I would have the satisfaction of knowing that I can run a mile in under 10 minutes. "We want to do what we love by focusing on things that mean a lot to us with people we want to be around." (Unit 2 iBook Section 4)
  • Frame your life

Health is one of my top priorities and being able to run a mile in under 10 minutes will take part in keeping me healthy. This will also let me spend a little more time with my friends because I won't be so far behind them when running and will be able to socialize during the run. "Make sure to consider these areas as you think about and plan for the future, so you can set goals that will provide the greatest benefit to them." (Unit 2 iBook Section 4)
  • Dream big, but start small

At the moment, I can run a mile in about 11 minutes and 30 seconds. To reach my goal, I will need to shave off 1 minute and 30 seconds of my mile time. "Setting a goal to lose weight is much less powerful than a goal to lose ten pounds in six months." (Unit 2 iBook Section 4) I can make this goal seem easier by taking off 5 to 10 seconds every time I go for a run, which is every other day. By the time that the summer is over, I will have taken off about 1 minute and 30 seconds of my mile time.
  • Take stock along the way

A way I can maintain a happy attitude throughout the summer is to know that taking time off of a mile is a hard thing to do and I will be doing my best every time I run to meet my goal. There shouldn't be much of a chance of anxiety because I don't have to be able to run a mile in under 10 minutes, it's just something that I'd like to accomplish. "Try to intertwine the process of goal setting with an ongoing habit of recognizing existing successes and accomplishments." (Unit 2 iBook Section 4)
