He was born in Anchiano, Florence. His mother, a Peasant and his father, a Notary. He was a renaissance man. He was an Italian polymath: painter, sculptor, architect, musician, scientist, mathematician, engineer, inventor, anatomist, geologist, cartographer, botanist, and writer. He is widely considered to be one of the greatest painters of all time and perhaps the most diversely talented person ever to have lived. He had many and diverse fields of arts and sciences. He died on May 2, 1519. -

Leonardo was exposed to both theoretical trainiong and a vast range of technical skills, including drafting, chemistry, metallurgy, metal working, plaster casting, leather working, mechanics and carpentry as well as the artistic skills of drawing, painting, sculpting and modelling. Leonardo collaborated with Verrocchio on his Baptism of Christ painting. -

Flying Machine Created
Leonardo was fascinated by the flight, producing many studies of the flight of birds. This included his Codex on the Flight of Birds, as well as plans for many flying machines. Within these plans he designed a helicopter and a light hang glider. Most were useless and didn't work, like his screw helicopter design that could not provide lift. However, the hang glider has been successfully constructed and demonstrated based on his designs. -

Leonardo and his pupil`s paintings
In 1506, Leonardo took on another pupil, Count Francesco Melzi, the son of a Lombard aristocrat, who is considered to have been his favourite student.He travelled to France with Leonardo, and remained with him until the latter's death.Upon Leonardo's death, Melzi inherited the artistic and scientific works, manuscripts, and collections of Leonardo, and faithfully administered the estate. -

Old Age and Death
From 1513-1519, Leonardo spent much of his time living in the Belvedere in the Vatican in Rome, where Rahael and Micheangelo were both active at the time. In 1516, he entered Francois' service being given the use of the manor house Clos Luce near the king's residence. It was here that he spent the last three years of his life and where he died on May 2, 1519.
