    Location was in Berlin, Germany. U.S., British and soviet forces divided and occupied germany.
  • NATO Formed

    NATO FormationSigned in Washington D.C. It was mutual defense pact that served to contain the possible soviet union advancement into western europe. This is significant because this insured that Russia would not take western europe

    Korean war75,000 soldiers from korean army went across the 38th parallel. The invasion was the very first military action in the cold war. By July, the americans have entered the war on south korea's behalf. 5 million soldiers were lost. The Korean Peninsula is still divided today.

    GenevaThis took place in geneva. This was an effort to get rid of problems in asia. including the french war. This marked a turning point in the U.S. Invovlement in vietnam.
  • Warsaw Pact signed

    Warsaw pactThe location is in Warsaw. The soviet Union and seven of its european satellites signed the treaty. The treaty made it to where if a member is attacked another member must aid to defend it. This helped secure the safety of Poland, Albania, Romania, Czech and Bulgaria.

  • Launch of Sputnik

    SputnikTook place in "gagarin's start". Took 98 minutes to orbit the rath and carried a satellite that weighed about 183 pounds. This is important becaus eit is what kickstarted the space age.
  • U-2 Incident

    Location was in Soviet union air space. An american spy plane was shot down by the soviet and FDR was forced to admit to the accusations and served two years in jail. Originally sentenced for ten but they exchanged spies in return of his early exit
  • Bay of pigs

    Bay of pigsEnded on April 19, 1961. Fidel drove his guerilla army into havana and overthrew general fulgencio. U.S. attempts to push castro out of power. There was an attempted invasion but there was simply too many of castro's troops.
  • Berlin Crisis

    Berlin CrisisEnded on June 9. Nikita delivered a speech that demamded the western powers to pull out their forces on western berlin. This sparked a three year crisis with building the berlin wall.
  • Berlin wall falls

    Berlin wall fallsGerman democratic republic began to build a barbed wire and wall in between east and west berlin. Nover 9, 1989, It was announced that citizens coud now cross. Many crossed freely and others began to bring hammers and tools to break the wall down.

    Lasted for 28 years, it kept east germans from going west. The wall is 11 feet tall. Many people were able to get across freely after it was legal but many took down the wall by demolition.
  • Cuban Missile Crisis

    Ended october 28. Leaders of the U.S. and Soviet in a 13 day political military standoff in october 1962 over the installation of nuclear soviet armed missiles in cuba. U.S. promises to never invade cuba in return of removal of the missiles.
  • JFK Assasination

    He was assasinated in an open top convertible. Though it is unclear where the shots came from. It is believed to have come from a building but there are speculations that there could have been more than one person responsible for this crime. The assasin's name was Lee harvey oswald. He killed a police officer along with JFK and during his arrest, a man name Ruby shot and fatally wounded Oswald which eventually killed him. Ruby was sentenced to die but died of lung cancer in a dallas hospital.

    ResolutionThis gave congress's approval for expansion of the vietnam war.LBJ and his advisers feared that the war effort would not gain enough power, support. However, they are criticized later on for not going after the war more aggressively.
  • The Tet Offensive

    Tet OffensiveOne of the largest military campaigns of the vietnam war by forces of viet cong and north vietnamese army. In total 70,000 of them. Nmaed for the Lunar New year holday called tet. A series of attacks on more than 100 cities and towns in south vietnam caused major damage. Despite all the casualties, North vietnam won.
  • Apollo 11 Moon Landing

    Apollo 11The rocket is 363 feet. 7.5 million pounds. 9:32 a.m. the engine starts. Three days later, the crew is in lunar orbit. The rocket splashes down on hawaii on July 24
  • Richard Nixon visits china

    Richard Nixon visits ChinaThis visit really aided in re-establishing friendsship with communist china. The american people really wanted to end the conflict and Nixin seemed to be such an unlikely candidate to do this type of thing that it shocked everybody. Also the U.S. could use china as a leverage over the soviets.This increased the chance of U.S.- China trade.

    Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). In a medium bowl, stir together the flour, baking soda, and salt; set aside.
    In a large bowl, cream together the margarine and 2 cups sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then the vanilla. Gradually stir in the dry ingredients until just blended. Roll the dough into walnut sized balls and roll the balls in remaining 1/4 cup of sugar. Place cookies 2 inches apart onto ungreased cookie sheets and flatten slightly.
