    Institute for Learning Sciences
    Roger Schank helped start the Institute for Learning Sciences at Northwestern University.
  • The Journal of the Learning Sciences published

    The Journal of the Learning Sciences published
    Janet Kolodner was founding editor.
  • The first degree program

    The first degree program
    The first Learning Science degree program is at Northwestern University and Roy Pea is its first director.
  • First International Conference of the LS

    First International Conference of the LS
    First International Conference of the Learning Sciences (ICLS). No formal society nor publication venue for Learning Sciences existed at this time.
  • CSCL workshop

    Computer Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL) becomes a distinct enough strand of research that it holds its own workshop
  • CSCL conference

    CSCL holds its own conference. Scholars consistently appeared at both ICLS and CSCL conferences. Activity in one conference was in no way mutually exclusive from activity in the other, yet contingents were eventually drawn more to one community over the other.
  • International Society of the Learning Sciences (ISLS)

    Given deep overlaps and crossover between CSCL and ICLS a formal society was created that oversaw both conference series.
