The Trojan war began in 1193 B.C. whent he Mycenaeans (ancient Greeks) attacked the city of Troy, as a retaliation for Paris of Troy stealing the wife of the Mycenaean king, Helen. -

The Cicones
Odysseus and his men sail to the island of the Cicones to plunder their island. The Cicones charge over the hill and Odysseus and his men slaughter all of the Cicone's soldiers, enslave the women, and kill all of their crops and stock. -

The Lotus Eaters
After leaving the Land of Cicones, Odysseus and his men sail to the Island of Lotus Eaters. Some of Odysseus' men eat the lotus flower. The lotus flower is a drug-like plant that make the men who taste it never want to leave back home. Finally, Odysseus drags his men back to the ship and they continue their journey on. -

The Cyclops
After the long days at sea- Odysseus and his men stop to rest in a cave on the Island of the Cyclopes, where they encounter Polyphemus. A cyclopes is a one-eyed giant monster who eats people, so the wise Odysseus and his men try to befriend him so they could get out of the cave. As a result, they give him wine to help him fall asleep and stab him in the eye, play a few tricks on him, then safely escape by riding under sheep. -

Aeolus
After escaping from the Cyclops, Odysseus and his men sail to Aeolia. On this island, Aeolus, the wind king, lives. He gives Odysseus a gift of stormy winds in a bag. Odysseus spends a total of one month on this island. -

Leaving Aeolus
After spending one month with the king, Odysseus and his men are back on track on their way to Ithaca, but his decieving men open the bag of winds the king gave them, and they are blown away by strong winds to Aeaea. -

Odysseus and his men encounter the Laestrygones, who are monsterous cannibals, who bombard one of their ship. -

Circe
While exploring the Island of Aeaea, they stumble across Circe, who is singing and weaving. Odysseus' men do not suspect that Circe is infact an evil witch. As a result, she offers them food and wine and she turns them into pigs. Odysseus begs her to let them go, but she persuades Odysseus to stay with her for a year. -

Leaving Circe and the Island of Aeaea
After spending a year with Circe, Odysseus convinces Circe to finally let them go, but Circe sends him to the Land of the Dead to seek the wisdom of the blind prophet Teiresias. -

The Land of the Dead
Odysseus and his men arrive in the Land of the Dead, the underworld, and he visits Tiresias and hears the prophecy Crice has sent him to hear. She tells Odysseus that he will encounter many more dangerous things, but Odysseus also sees that his mother has died from a broken heart. They continue forth with their journey. -

The Sirens
As they are sailing, Odysseus and his men are preparing for the Sirens. Sirens are creatures with the head of a woman, and the body of a bird. They sing beautiful, melodious, songs that make anyone who hear it want to go crazy and throw themselves overboard. The men put beeswax in their ear so they don't hear them, but Odysseus, wanting to hear them, ties himself to the ship's mast so he could listen. -

Charybdis and Scylla
As they pass the Sirens, they steer close to the shore to avoid Charybdis, but in doing so, they come upon the six-headed monster, Scylla; however, Scylla reaches down and eats six of Odysseus' men. -

Helios
They are on Helios's land and Odysseus' men find cattle. Odysseus warns his men to not eat the cattle, but his men slaughter and eat the cattle anyway. -

Zeus' Lightning Bolt
As soon as Odysseus and his men leave the island, Zeus gets his revenge by striking the boat with a thunderbolt because his men ate the cattle; however, everyone dies excpet Odysseus, who after many days is washed up on the shore of Calypso. -

Calypso
Odysseus floats to the island of Ogygia, the home of Calypso, the sweet nymph, who persuades Odysseus to stay with her for 7 years. -

Leaving Calypso
Calypso keeps Odysseus on her island for seven years and finally she lets him go because the messenger god, Hermes, tells her that the gods are very angry with her. She helps Odysseus build a raft and he sails away. -

Odysseus sails to Scheria and tells King Alcinous his adventurous story. -

Arrives home in Ithaca
Odysseus finally arrives in Ithaca. Athena, the goddess of war and wisdom, disguises him as an old beggar so the suitors who are stealing Penelope away from him won't recognize him. -

Osysseus and Telemachus are reunited, seeing each other for the first time. -

Battle with the Suitors
Penelope announced an archery battle. Whoever wins and can pull back Odysseus' bow, will be her husband. Odysseus, furious, traps everyone in the great hall and kills them all with the help of Athena, Telemachus, and 2 trustworthy friends. -

Reunited with Penelope
Penelope has not seen her husband for 20 years, but she was relieved when she finally realized it was him, because at first she did not believe he was the real Odysseus because she had given up hope.
