  • Pennsylvania Constitution

    This allowed more schools to be built in the state of Pennsylvania. By doing this it allowed education to be in reach of the poorer children of Pennsylvania. This also caused friction between the rich and the poor because they wanted school to free for those less fortunate. Many hated being labeled as poor and the rich didn't like they were the only ones who had to pay for their children's education.

  • New England Asylum for the Blind

    This school was located in Boston and is also known today as Perkins Institute for the Blind. The most well known is person to attended this school was Helen Keller alongside her personal teacher Annie Sullivan. The main advocate and creator of the school is Dr. John Dix Fisher. He brought back the idea of a blind school after visiting the first school for the blind in Paris.
  • Oberlin College

    Oberlin College was the first college to allow woman and African American to attend. Mary Jane Patterson also attended the school who was the 1st African American woman to graduate. The school at first allowed woman to attend the the female classes or teacher classes. It was not till 1837 when four woman where allowed to attended the male classes.
  • Native American Boarding Schools

    In 1864 Native Americans were forbidden to teach their children their Native tongue. Native American children where also not allowed to attend schools on their own lands.These children were forced to attend other schools where they were taught how to speak English. However if they resorted back to speaking their tribal language they were punished severely.
  • Plessy V. Ferguson

    This case happened in Louisiana state were they was a law called the Separate Car Act. This meant that white and blacks rode on different carts in trains.A man named Homer Plessy was arrested for sitting in a white only cart. This man looked white but he was 1/8th black and was therefore was considered black. He said that they could not do that because it was against his rights in the constitution. The Supreme Court ruled otherwise was legal and backed Louisiana.
  • The Great Depression

    The Great Depression was in United States history where the economy was at the all time lowest. During this time children who attended school were forced to dropout to work for food. Many school were forced to close due to lack of funding, supplies and teachers available.
  • World War II

    After World War II there where benefits given to those returning from the war. One of these many benefits were scholarships offered to the veterans to attend school. This also benefits many people today as their descendants are offered scholarships as well.
  • Brown V. Board

    During this time there were people believed that it was against the constitution to be separated by race, especially in schools. Oliver Brown attempted to get his daughter to be allowed entry to a school but the principal refused. This case ended up being ruled that segregation in public schools was against the constitution. This event happened on May 17, 1954.
  • Title IX

    This law made it so that people of different genders could not be refused to a sport based on gender. This later helped many females have more freedom in school when participating in sports. An example of this act is the case called Force v, Pierce which happened in 1983. This act would later help to get rid discrimination based on gender.
  • Education of all Handicapped Children Act

    This act was passed in order to protect the rights of disabled students. With this act it allowed allowed children with disabilities to be provided an education. This also allowed the students to have the rights that their non-disabled peers had as well.
  • Plyler V. Doe

    This case allowed students who lacked the proper documents to be able to attend schools. This law allowed families immigrating to the United States to send their children to school for an education. This case happened when Texas did not admit students who did not have the proper documents. Students who were admitted had to pay tuition because they did not have the legal documents.
  • Wallace V. Jaffree

    This case took place when he thought that it was against the constitution for his students to be forced to pray at school. This case took place in Alabama. In the end the Supreme Court ruled that is was against the 1st amendment for Alabama to have students pray or for teacher to participate in prayers.
