    Creation of Boston Latin School
    Colonists established public schools in the 1600's and then continue to the creation of Boston Latin School. The people impacted in a positive way were the sons of the Boston elite, the school also claimed many prominent Bostonian's, Massachusetts citizens and New Englanders as alumni.
  • Bill for the More General Diffusion of knowledge

    Bill for the More General Diffusion of knowledge
    Thomas Jefferson proposed the Bill for the More General Diffusion of Knowledge. Jefferson's plan envisioned public support for the secondary schools and scholarships for the best and brightest students to attend the College of William and Mary.
  • Plessy v. Ferguson

    Plessy v. Ferguson
    U.S. Supreme Court decision upheld the constitutionality of racial segregation under the separate but equal doctrine. The case stemmed from an incident in which African-American train passenger refused to sit in a car for blacks. Plessy appealed arguing that the 14th amendment was violated. Court ruled in favor of Ferguson.
  • Brown v. Board of Education

    Brown v. Board of Education
    Case in which racial segregation of children in public schools was unconstitutional. Linda Brown and her family believed that the segregated school system violated the 14th amendment and took the case to the court, in which the Court decided that state laws requiring separate but equal schools did violate the equal protection clause.
  • Tinker v. Des Moines

    Tinker v. Des Moines
    To protest Beth and her brother wore black armbands to school, fearing disruption administration prohibited wearing armbands, from that the Tinker's were removed from school when they failed to comply, but their actions then were protected by the 1st amendment.
  • Title IX

    Title IX
    Act that was passed to end discrimination on race, color, religion, sex or national origin. Before the Act was passed feminists during the 1970's protested to make changes and add sex as protected class category, the title IX was enacted to fill this gap and prohibit discrimination in education programs.

    The Federal Tribal Colleges Act established a community college in every Indian Reservation that allowed young people to go to college without leaving their families. In this case the people impacted positively were Native Americans college students as parents too.
  • Education of all Handicapped Children Act

    Education of all Handicapped Children Act
    In this case Public Schools were accepting federal funds to provide equal access to education and one free meal a day for children with physical and mental disabilities.
  • Plyler v. Doe

    A revision of Texas Education laws allowed the state to withhold form local school districts state funds for educating children of illegal aliens.
  • New Jersey v. T.L.O

    A teacher accused T.L.O of smoking in the bathroom, when she denied the allegation the student was searched and found cigarettes and marijuana. A family court decided T.L.O a delinquent and that her rights were not violated since students have reduced expectations of privacy in school.

  • Grutter v. Bollinger

    Barbara Grutter alleged that her equal protection rights were violated when the university of Michigan Law Schools attempt to gain a diverse student body resulted in denial of her admission application and with that, the supreme court disagreed and said that institutions have interest in promoting diversity.
