  • Nine Hour Movement

    Nine Hour Movement
    In Toronto a few print workers started a strike/movement for a shorter work week and to reduce daily work hours. The strike became huge and ended up with 10 thousand supporters rallying in favor for this. However, the men who started the strike got arrested and it was granted that workers now get a nine hour work day.
  • The Winnipeg Strike

    The Winnipeg Strike
    In 1919 soldiers came home from battle to find out there had been high unemployment rates.On May 15 the same year workers left their jobs to strike so they can make enough money supporting their families in an evolving economy.
  • Bloody Sunday

    Bloody Sunday
    600 unemployed and homeless men started a labour strike in front of a Vancouver post office which lead to RCMP acting towards the strike. These men have been striking for weeks. On June 19th 1938, after a warning, authorities turned the strike violent and attacked the area with tear gas and batons causing 42 people to be hospitalized and approximately 20 individuals to be arrested.

    A act that made it a priority for workers to be safe and well while working.This act gave workers two major rights.
    1.The right to know about dangers in a workplace environment
    2.The right to refuse unsafe tasks
  • Quebec General Strike/Negotiation

    Quebec General Strike/Negotiation
    Three public service groups work together to try and negotiate a deal with the government for higher wages.That quickly got shut down and over 200 thousand people went on strike for 10 days and lead to the presidents from the three unions being sentenced to prison and workers went back to their jobs with no success from the strike.

    The federal government introduces wages and price control. One year later the national legislative body starts a nation wide day of protest to mark the anniversary of the day fair/good wages were provided.

    Charter of Rights and Freedoms
    In April 1982, the Charter of Rights and Freedoms was signed. This gave every Canadian citizen equal rights for jobs no matter the race,religion etc and was a huge step closer to equality for everyone.

    Labour today is much more different. All these events plus many more that took place lead to workers having equal rights. We now have the right to strike,shorter work weeks,shorter hours,fair/good wages and plenty more.
