A meeting is held, and during the conversations, Ella, the harpy, speaks of a prophecy that refers to the search for Annabeth: The Mark of Athena. -

They begin to leave the camp while Hazel and Frank delay the Roman campers. The Argo II is damaged, and Leo lands to repair it, encountering Echo and Narcissus. There they are told that they have to look for the Athena Mark to gather the Romans and the Greeks. -

On his trip to talk to Bacchus the god of wine, also known as Dionysus (his Greek form), Gaia appears to Piper and tells her that she manages to choose which boy dies with her, Percy or Jason. When he refuses to pick up, Jason and Percy's eyes glaze and glow like gold and try to fight to the death until Piper knocks them both out. -

On the ship the seven discuss the strange behavior of Jason, Percy and Leo. Piper tests a theory and says: "Eidolons that raise their hands." At first everything seems normal, and then Leo, Jason and Percy raise their hands, revealing that they are possessed. Piper bewitches them to leave their bodies and the boys (except Frank) return to normal. Later, Percy, Frank and coach Hedge fight with Forcis and Keto for information about Gaia. -

The seven quickly leave for Charleston and fly to Battery Park. Annabeth, Piper and Hazel meet to go meet a mysterious ghost, who turned out to be Aphrodite. Meanwhile, Jason, Leo and Frank go to a museum in Fort Sumter to find a map about the Athena Mark. Aphrodite tells them about her love life and the other Olympians who are suffering from being confused about her Roman or Greek identity. -

After their conversation, angry Romans who are seeking revenge for the destruction of Jupiter's camp come and a fight breaks out. Annabeth finds Reyna in Fort Sumter who was there to retrieve the map that her friends did not find. Reyna begs Annabeth to come with her and have a painful death to save her camp, but Annabeth tells Reyna that she will only follow the mark to unite and save both camps. The seven arrive at the ship and leave safely to see the brothers of Quiron, who live in the sea. -

During the ride, Hazel shows Leo a flashback of his life in the 1940s in Louisiana, where Leo meets Sammy Valdez, a boy Hazel liked, and looked and acted extremely similar to Leo. Sammy took a damn diamond that Hazel unintentionally appeared at his feet, promising that he would not sell it. Then Hazel and Leo see Sammy, now a grandfather, on the front porch of a house, talking to himself as if Hazel were listening. -

Sammy says he sold the diamond to move and live with his family in Houston, Texas, but as a result, he learned from Hera that Hazel would not return until after his death. Leo's mother leaves the house, holding Leo as a baby. Leo's mother tells Leo that Sammy is his great grandfather. After waking up from the flashback, they find a shrimp monster attacking the ship. During the fight, Leo, Frank and Hazel were kicked into the water by the monster and found the ichthiocentaurs -

The brothers of Chiron. They negotiate with the ichthiocentaurs about the next war. Then they meet the famous Hercules near the pillars and for them to pass they have to please Hercules so that Piper and Jason have to get the second horn of Aqueloo, the god of the river with a bull's head. Although it was Hercules who wanted Aqueloo's other horn, Piper decided that Hercules didn't deserve the horn and keeps it for her. -
Period: 1 CE to 1 CE

She pulls a stack of provisions from the horn, and Hercules falls under her. The seven demigods then cross the pillars and navigate to Rome. Annabeth has to find the Parthenon of Athens following the Mark of Athena and fight her guardian Arachne. Percy, Jason and Piper travel to an underground area under the Colosseum and fight against the twin giants, Oto and Efialtes, the anti-Dionysus. Frank, Hazel and Leo travel in search of Nico, but instead found the rolls and spheres of Archimedes. -

Towards the end, Annabeth overcomes Arachne by tricking her into weaving her own trap. Percy and Jason fight against the giants and with (very little) help from the Roman counterpart of Dionysus, Bacchus, rescue Nico from the jar in which he was trapped. Frank, Hazel and Leo fight against the eidolons and save the Archimedes scrolls from burning. -

Despite Annabeth's insistence that he let her go, Percy refuses to leave her again and they both fall into darkness. After Percy and Annabeth fall in Tartarus, the remaining six (all five with Nico Di Angelo) demigods and coach Hedge are in a meeting. Nico says Percy told him to lead the demigods to the Doors of Death, while he and Annabeth could meet them at the end of Tartarus on the other side of the Gates. Nico and Hazel say they are pretty sure that Percy and Annabeth have not yet died. -

They all meet where Annabeth secures the Athena Parthenos. Nico informs others that the Doors of Death have to be closed from both sides (from Tartarus and Greece). However, Arachne pulls Annabeth towards Tartar by a spider silk while the statue is raised towards her ship. Percy manages to grab Annabeth, but soon realizes he will continue down with her if he doesn't let her go.
