Navigation Acts
The Navigation Act directed trade between England and the colonies. The colonies had to use British Ships and Ports and they could only trade with the British. The colonists were angered by this law and they began to smuggle, they wanted more money, and they wanted to trade with other countries besides the British. -
Proclamation of 1763
The Proclamation of 1763 was the law where it set a westward boundary, so the colonists could not move west past the Appalachian Mountains. The colonists were mad because some speculators had bought land but could not settle it because it was past the boundary. Also, they were furious because Britain ignored the colonists land claims. -
Sugar Act
The Sugar Act lowered the tax on imported molasses. They thought that if they lowered the tax the colonists would be more willing to pay the taxes. They wanted to raise revenue to pay for the debt. The colonists were angered because they felt the law violated their rights as English citizens. -
Stamp Act
The Stamp Act placed a tax on almost all imported items. All printed material had to have a stamp on them. The colonists protested, formed groups, boycotted goods, and signed agreements against the law. -
Declaratory Act
The Declaratory Act was the law that Parliament had the right to tax and make decisions for the British colonies "In all cases". Some of the colonists thought that there would be more taxes coming soon. -
Townshend Act
The Townshend Act was where they put a tax on impoted goods, such as, paper, tea, glass, tea, and lead. The colonists were upset because they thought that only their representatives should have the right to tax them. There was also boycotts and they created groups. -
Tea Act
The Tea Act allowed a company, or sole control, of the trade for tea in America. The colonists called for a new boycott. The Daughter's of Liberty issued a pamphlet declaring that rather than parting with their freedom, they would part with their tea. -
Intolerable Acts
The Intolerable Acts were made to punish the people of Massachussetts for their resistence to British's laws. The colonists were angry and they thought the acts violated their rights as English citizens. -
Quebec Act
The Quebec Act set up a government for Quebec, it gave Quebec the area west of the Appalachian Mountains and North of the Ohio River. The colonists expressed their feelings in their name for the new laws- The Intolerable Acts.
