Lodge Application Approved
The Council Executive Board approved the application for a lodge on October 17, 1945. -
Lodge Chartered
Lodge No. 331 and the name Klahican were in use from the charter date. Klahican means trap in the Delaware Indian Language. The Venus Fly Trap which is the lodge logo is indigenous only to the Cape Fear Council Area. It is a meat eating plant that is known the world over for both its uniqueness and beauty. -
First Members Inducted - J.D. Barnes Elected Chief
The first installation was held on February 22 & 23, 1946 at Camp Singletary. The ceremony was conducted by a team from Tuscarora Council’s Nayawin Rar Lodge. The first lodge chief, J. D. Barnes was elected in 1946. -
Camp Klahican Ordeal
An ordeal was held at Camp Klahican (at Salters lake near Jones Lake, Bladen County) in 1948. This may have been the first put on entirely by Klahican Lodge. Salters lake (Camp Klahican) was the Cape Fear Councils 1949 summer camp site. -
Camp Tom Upchurch Opens
In 1950 Camp Tom Upchurch was opened for summer camp and the lodges activities moved to Upchurch until it was closed following the 1974 summer session. -
Mike Simmons - Section 6A Vice-Chief
Mike Simmons from Klahican Lodge was elected Section 6A Vice-Chief in 1961. -
Klahican to Host its First Section 6A Conclave . . . However . . .
In 1968, Klahican Lodge was to have hosted its first Section 6A Conclave. However, the lodge could not handle the event so Occennchee Lodge hosted it. The gathering was held at Camp Durant in Neuse, N.C. Only six lodge members attended and the total conclave attendance was 58 arrowmen. Occennchee Lodge place our Venus Fly Trap totem on the conclave patch. -
Billy Farmer - Section 6A Chief
Billy Farmer from Klahican Lodge was Section 6A Chief in 1969. -
Trip Ruth - Section 3A Chief
Trip Ruth from Klahican Lodge held the 3A Section Chief job in 1975. -
Lodge Activities Move to Cape Fear Council Scout Reservation
In 1978 the first ordeal at the Cape Fear Council Scout Reservation was held (also known as the Rice Property). Camp Bowers, located on the Cape Fears Council Scout Reservation was opened for summer camp in 1981. -
Lodge Hosts Section 3A Conclave
Klahican hosted its second conclave in 1978. The section 3A conclave took place at Fort Caswell Baptist Assembly at Fort Caswell, N.C. Approximately 500 arrowmen were in attendance. This was a unusual conclave because the arrowmen were quartered in houses and did not camp. E. Urner Goodman, founder of the Order of the Arrow was the honored guest. Dr. Goodman delivered a most impressive speech after the section elections on Saturday night. Rick Burton, National Vice-Chief was also present. -
Brad Starr - Section Chief
Brad Starr from Klacihan held the 3A Section Chief job in 1978. -
Brad Starr Elected National Chief
In 1980, Brad Starr was elected as the National Chief of the Order of the Arrow. He served in this capacity until December of 1982. -
Martin Willard - SE Region Chief
Martin Willard from Klahican Lodge was the SE Region Chief in 1980. -
Craig Buffkin - Section 7 Chief
Craig Buffkin from Klahican Lodge was Section 7 Vice-Chief in 1984 and Section Chief in 1986. -
Lodge Hosts Section 7 Conclave
In 1988 the Lodge hosted the Section 7 conclave at Camp Bowers. Over 1000 Arrowmen were in attendance. -
Lodge Hosts Section 7B Conclave
We again hosted the now Section 7B conclave in April of 2000. This was at Camp Bowers. -
Nathan Finnin - Southern Region Chief
Nathan Finnin served as both a section vice chief and section chief before becoming Southern Region Chief in 2002.
