By 1996 Taliban had taken control of Afghanistan. Al Qaeda helped persuade Mullah Omar to order destruction. -

After the attack on 9/11/2001, President George W. Bush gave the Taliban to Mr. bin Laden. After they refused, the US joined forces with minority tribes, tribes that had never accepted the Taliban's rule. The Enormous campaign drove the Taliban out of major Afghan cities. -
The Karzai Government
Hamid Karzai exiled the former king of Afghanistan. After this, he was named chairman of an interim government that replaced the defeated Taliban, making him the ruler of this country. He took office June 2002. -
