Pope Boniface VIII tries to assert papal authority over King Philip IV. This had been done by many popes before Boniface. King Philip IV believed he had power over the Church and the pope had no authority over him. This created conflict. -

King Philip IV holds Pope Boniface VIII as a prisoner, hoping to put him on trial for disobeying the king, and trying to claim authority over him. The Pope was rescued, but died shortly after. Papal authority was considered less than authority of the king from then on. -
