Melbourne is founded
Melbourne is founded by John Batman and John Pascoe Fawkner in 1835, 47 years after the European settlement of Australia.This is an importance to Melbourne's history as if we weren't be known as Melbourne, we would not be recognised for our Arts and Culture, and our fine cafes and restaurants. -
Melbourne declared capital of Port Phillip district.
William Lonsdale built the first government block, declaring Melbourne the capital of the Port Phillip district. This is signifcant to Melbourne history as it is a turning point in Melbourne and it has given importance to the the development of the city. -
Melbourne is named.
Melbourne was named by governor Richard Bourke in 1837, in honour of William Lamb—the 2nd Viscount Melbourne. This is significant because it gave us an identity. -
Melboune Declared a City
Melbourne was declared a city by Queen Victoria on 25 June 1847. This was important because Melbourne would not be what it is today. -
First Public Hospital Opened
In 1848, the first public hospital in Melbourne opened doors to the public. This is significant as Melbourne now has an institution providing medical and surgical treatment and nursing care for sick or injured Melburnians. -
Victoria becomes a Colony.
In 1851, Victoria becomes a colony, separate from New South Wales. This is significant as Melbourne is now an individual state to Australia. -
Melbourne overtakes Sydney's Population
Melbourne overtakes Sydney to become Australia's most populous state. This is of significance because it shows that Melbourne is becoming a vibrant, liveable and desirable city to live in. -
Melbourne city streets first lit by electric lighting
In 1894, Melbourne city streets first lit by electric lighting. This is significant because people can now see and make their way around the city without troubles. -
First season of the Victorian Football League
The first season of the Victorian Football League commenced in 1897. This is significant as VFL, now known as AFL, Australian Football League, is an unique icon to our Australia. -
Construction of Flinders Street Station
Construction of the current Flinders Street Station building begins in 1900. This an importance to our history as Flinders Street Station has been an unique cultural icon of Melbourne and rich history and memories still lies there now. -
Melbourne becomes a National Capital.
The Commonwealth of Australia is formed. Melbourne becomes national capital and is declared a state. This is significant because Melbourne is classified as a state of Australia and shows identification. -
First Australian Open Championship
The First Australian Open championship occurs in Melbourne. This is important to the develpoment of Melbourne because sport is part of our culture and with Melbourne having the opportunity to hold this renouned event that is experience around the whole world is privilegde to the state. -
First electric tram service commences
First electric tram service commences in 1906. This is an importance in Melbourne's Development as trams have been an unique icon of the city and Melbourne is the only city of Australia to have trams as a major public transport system that convinently transport people to where ever they to go. -
Melbourne install cities first set of Traffic Lights
In 1928, the Melbourne City Council installs the city's first set of traffic lights at Collins and Swanston streets. This is an importance to Melbourne history as if we did not have them today, roads would have been a disaster; cars would smash into others and we would not have a safe roads. -
First Moomba Festival.
The first Moomba Festival was held in 1955. It is the Australia's largest free community festival and one of the longest running festivals in Australia.It is held annually in the city of Melbourn. Moomba is celebrated during the Labour Day long weekend. This festival is of significance to our history as it commands a strong place in the social history of the city, despite its critics. -
Melbourne Olympic Games
The Melbourne Olympic Games was significant in Melbourne's development as the first television was used in Australia. -
Colour Television Introduced.
On the 1st of March 1975, colour television was introduced to Melbourne. This date shows how our technology has immensely developed overtime. -
City Loop Subway Invented
The City Loop subway is opened in 1982. Melbourne resisdents now have a reliable puplic transport system that can take them around the city. -
Rialto Towers completed.
Rialto Towers completed and becomes the city's tallest building as well as the tallest in the southern hemisphere in 1986. This is an important part of our history as it was the tallest building tower in Australia, and was the tallest building in the Southern Hemisphere during 1985 - 2004. -
Victorian bushfires around Melbourne
Victorian bushfires around Melbourne occured on the 7th of Feburary 2009. This was a key part of Melbourne's history as it was the worst fires in the history of the city. A lot of homes were lost, as well as lifes. This event was called, 'Black Saturday.' -
Melbourne celebrate 175th Birthday
Melbourne celebrates its 175th Birthday in 2010. From the day we were found, Melbourne has changed so much on terms of landscape, culture, community and technology. We have reached a long way since the 1800's. -
4D TV
The 4D tv is created. This is significant because it marks how far our knowledge of technology is. With the 4D tv, you can feel, smell, touch and experience things on the tv. -
Melbourne run out of Fossil Fuels.
On the 9th of August 2029, Melbourne run out of Fossil Fuels. As a result, we would not have electricity to power our homes, and fuel for our cars to travel. -
Teleportation.
Teleportation will be created in year 2029. This would have significance to Melbourne's history as we would not need cars, trains, buses, trams and other types of transport as we can just teleport to wherever we wish to go.
