Lynbrook

Kevin Yin's Four Years of High School

  • Freshman Orientation

During my freshman orientation at Lynbrook High School, I walked around campus for the first time. My older brother graduated from Lynbrook in 2008, so I felt excited to experience the same school my brother attended for four years. In the morning, I waited at the front gate before a large of group of Link Crew leaders cheered us into the gym. To finally become a high school student is a surreal experience I will never forget.
  • First School Rally

Before entering high school, I would hear about Lynbrook High School's rallies from my brother and cousins. Finally being able to be a part of a rally was a memorable moment for me. I was surprised by the loud cheers upperclassmen and the sense of unity during the rally.
  • First CMEA Band/Orchestra Festival

My first CMEA band/orchestra festival was unique and exciting. We performed at Saratoga High School and earned a Unanimous Superior rating. I remember the feeling of the music enveloping me onstage during the performance.
  • Freshman Field Trip

    Freshman Field Trip
On this day, the freshman science classes went to Intel's International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF). I am thankful for my group of friendly classmates and our parent chaperone. We also went to the Tech Museum, since ISEF was held at the San Jose Convention Center.
  • My Cousin's College Graduation

    My Cousin's College Graduation
My oldest cousin, Isabell, graduated from UC Davis this day. This is a memorable moment for me because I realized that everyone was growing up. In the past, I played with my cousins on the weekends. During my cousin's graduation, I understood that it was time to move on and start thinking about living independently. I cheered a lot for Isabell on this day.
  • Lion King on Broadway

    Lion King on Broadway
I watched my first broadway show in Las Vegas this day. The performances were all professional. I especially enjoyed the music, since Lion King is one of my favorite Disney movies.
  • Sacred Heart Community Service

As part of Lynbrook's Key Club, I volunteered for Sacred Heart Community Center's annual Thanksgiving Food Packaging event. Functioning as an assembly line, everyone worked together to prepare cardboard boxes filled with Thanksgiving foods. I was a runner, one of the people who carried the box across the assembly line. This event was the most meaningful Key Club event I ever participated in.
  • My First Injury

    My First Injury
Right after this picture was taken, I slipped while on my scooter and injured myself. The scrapes on my elbow and knee healed soon enough, but memories of my first injury will stay forever. This is a memorable moment during my high school life because it was the first time I hurt myself while having fun outside.
  • Picture with my World History Group Members

Picture with my World History Group Members
This was the first time other classmates wanted to take a picture with me. In high school, I lacked social skills and had trouble meeting others. This day is important to me because my group members were friendly and accepting of me.
  • Disneyland with Relatives

    Disneyland with Relatives
During this summer vacation, I went to Disneyland with my brother and cousins. Usually, we go to the amusement park with the adults, but they let us have a day to ourselves.
  • My Brother's Birthday

    My Brother's Birthday
We celebrated Philip's birthday at my grandmother's house. Undoubtedly, family is the most important part of my life.

    Johns Hopkins Engineering Innovation

During my junior summer, I attended Johns Hopkins Engineering Innovation, a challenging and highly selective engineering program at CSU Fullerton in Los Angeles. I learned a lot about engineering, but I also realized how many sacrfices my mother made so that I could have this opportunity. In order for me to attend, she spend one month with me in a hotel room. Without her, I would have never been able to participate in this summer program.
  • Universal Studios with my Family

    Universal Studios with my Family
During Engineering Innovation, my father and brother flew to Los Angeles to spend time with me and my mom. Together, we spent a weekend at Universal Studios, staying at the Hilton hotel. Even though I had no time to do my weekend homework for Johns Hopkins's program, I was thankful for my family's support during this challenging summer program.
  • Last Day of Engineering Innovation

    Last Day of Engineering Innovation
On the last day of the Johns Hopkins engineering program, every group presented their spaghetti bridges for testing. Our group ended in second place, and I passed the summer program. This program was definitely one of the hardest classes I have ever taken, so I was happy to survive this program. I even received a certificate for passing the class. Of course, watching my bridge break was rather heartbreaking for me.

    Orchestra Summer Camp

My first orchestra summer camp experience was almost unbearable. Everyday, I would wake up at 6:00 a.m. and practice until nighttime. This was also the first time in a new orchestra, California Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, so I met new musicians who were highly talented. Nevertheless, I am thankful to have experienced such a challenging musical experience.
  • Lynbrook Crafts Faire

    Lynbrook Crafts Faire
This was not the first time I attended the Lynbrook Crafts Faire, but I never performed in a chamber group before. A stage was set up in front of the venue, and many instrumental groups performed to entertain the visitors. I had a lot of fun, and my family even came to support me.
  • UCLA Bruin Day

Bruin Day is a day dedicated to showing incoming freshman the UCLA campus. I attended many seminars offered to teach freshmen about college life. The next time I visit the campus will be at the beginning of four years as a Bruin freshman.
  • Last Violin Lesson

    Last Violin Lesson
After ten years of violin lessons, I had my final lesson with Mrs. Zhen. Even though I did not reach my goal of performing in CYS Associate Orchestra, my teacher supported me and taught me the value of music.
