Polk sends John slidell to Mexico with an offer to buy New Mexico and California. When the news reached Mexico the country called their president a traitor because he was going to sell the land to the US. -
US troops stationed at disputed border
General Taylor's army marches south, past the Nueces River and over to the Rio Grande. The solders were moving into the land that was claimed by both nations. America was making a stand. -
Polk Declares War!
Polk is informed by General Taylor of the skirmishing, and decides to go to war with Mexico. Congress aproves $10 million and 50,000 volenteers for the war effort. -
US Victory, The Battle of Monterrey
As part of General Taylor's plan to cut off nothern Mexic, Taylor's army invades the city and is successful. This success helps the government recruit more troops. -
Mexico City Surrenders
U.S artillery pounded the Mexican position for more than a day. Mexico fought back but it was futile. Eventually Mexico city fell. -
Treaty of Guandelupe Hidalgo
U.S settled on a piece agreement whereby the U.S will pay Mexico $15 million and recieve California, New Mexico and maintain the border of Texas at the Rio Grande.
