The military used these standardized tests to see their general intellectual levels; these early twentieth-century standardized tests have been used ever since. Standardized testing is still used today; the tests have been designed for all ages. The tests are best used for testing large groups at once. Standardized testing is efficient and cost-effective.

    During The Great Depression President Franklin D. Roosevelt turned his attention to creating jobs instead of education. These jobs sometimes provided benefits for education such as giving money to schools to hire needed teachers. Other examples of benefits are buying teaching supplies, free lunches for students, and building larger schools to replace old one room schools. The president also provided study time for youth in the working field, because of this the rate for earning diplomas went up.

    African American children had a suit filed on their behalf to be allowed into public schools. The 1954 ruling was unanimous. Brown vs. Board of Education became an important moment for American education. The court said education was the most important state and local function. Having mixed classrooms would help academic outcome form students.

    In 1970 the special education public law was passed. This meant students with special needs were allowed to attend public schools for equal opportunities. Later in 1973 the Rehabilitation Act guaranteed the rights of disabled be allowed in the work force. In 1975 congress passed the education for all handicapped children, in 1990 it became known as the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. By 1976 all states had laws for public school programs for students with disabilities.

    Teacher evaluation is important to improving student achievement. Making sure teachers are effective will help the outcome of students learning. In 2012 more than half the states required teacher evaluations. Teacher evaluations still have a long ways to go when it comes to being treated fairly.
