Navigation Acts
The Navigation Acts directed trade between England and the colonies,prevented colonists from using foreign ships, adn preventing colonists from sending certain products foutside the area that makes up England's empire. The acts made colonists angry because the British ships were more expensive than foreign ships and they couldn't trade so the colonists started smuggling. -
Proclamation of 1763
The Proclamation of 1763 set the Appalachian Mountains as the temorary western boundary for the colonies. TH eProclamation angered the colonists because they wantes to move west and were furious that Britain ignored their land claims. -
Sugar Act
The Sugar Act lowers the tax on imported mollasses in hopes colonists would pay the taxes and it also let officers seize goods from smugglers without court approval. The colonists beliefed these British actions violateed their rights as English citizens and they arranged boycotts. -
Stamp Act
The Stamp Act placed a tax on almost all printed materials, including newpapers,wills,and playing cards.All printed materials had to have a stamp which was applied after the tax was paid. The Virginia assembley passed a resolution, The Sons of Liberty were started,there were boycotts,non-importation agreements,and in March 1766 the Stamp Act was repealed. -
Declaratory Act
The Declaratory Act states that Parliament had a right to tax and make descisions for the colonies "in all cases". The colonists didn't have an immediate reaction because some were unsure about the act. -
Townshed Acts
The Townshed Acts were taxs on imports such as tea,glass,and paper,with the tax being paid at the port of entry.The colonists reacted by founding the Daughters of Liberty who urged people to wear home made fabrics and produce other goods they needed rather than buy British goods. -
Tea Act
The Tea Act allows the British East India company a virual monopoly,or sole control of the trade for tea into America. The colonists responded with the Boston Tea Party and the Daughters of Liberty issuing a pamphlet declaring that rather than part with freedom the will part with their tea. -
Coercive Acts
These harsh laws were intended to punish the people of Massachusetts for their resistence to British laws, close Boston Harbor until tea is paid for, ban town meetings, and force Bostonians to shelter soldiers. The colonists responded by calling the acts the Intolerable acts and creating the first continental congress. -
Quebec Act
The Quebec Act sets up a government for Quebec and gave Quebec the area West of the Appalachians and North of the Ohio River. The colonists were angry because the act stopped thir westward expansion and allowed French Roman Catholic institutions. They also called it one of the Intolerable Acts.
